Free online PNG to ASE converter

A graphics application may require an Adobe Swatch Exchange file when a color palette must be shared between Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, or compatible software. Converting a PNG to ASE extracts colors as reusable swatches; it does not package the PNG image, layers, or animation.

What the PNG format is

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a raster format that stores images as pixels with lossless compression. It supports RGB, grayscale, and indexed color, plus an alpha channel for transparency.

Web developers, interface designers, photographers, illustrators, game artists, and operating systems use PNG for icons, screenshots, logos, illustrations, and other artwork that needs sharp edges or transparent areas. Applications such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, GIMP, Inkscape, and Affinity Photo can open and create PNG files.

What the ASE format is

In this conversion, ASE means Adobe Swatch Exchange. An ASE file stores reusable color swatches and, where supported, swatch names and groups for transfer between compatible graphics applications.

ASE is useful for sharing a brand palette or moving selected colors between Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, and other programs that support the format. It stores color definitions rather than pixels, so it does not retain the PNG's dimensions, artwork, transparency, layers, or image effects.

The .ase extension is also used by Aseprite for sprite documents. That is a different format despite the identical extension. The conversion described here creates an Adobe Swatch Exchange palette, not an Aseprite sprite file.

How to convert a PNG to ASE

Using 101convert.com:

1. Open the PNG-to-ASE converter on 101convert.com.
2. Upload the PNG and select ASE as the output format.
3. Start the conversion and download the generated ASE file.
4. Open the file in the target graphics application and inspect the swatches before using them in a design or print workflow.

The converter analyzes colors in the raster image and creates a palette. It does not convert the image to vector artwork or produce an editable copy of the original PNG.

Creating a controlled palette in desktop software

Desktop software is preferable when the palette needs specific colors, names, groups, or color-management settings.

1. Open the PNG in Photoshop with File → Open, or open it in Illustrator if the artwork is already part of an Illustrator document.
2. Sample the required colors with Photoshop's Eyedropper tool. Use Point Sample for individual pixels or an averaged sample size for photographs and textured artwork.
3. Open Window → Swatches, create a swatch for each selected color, and assign descriptive names where the application allows it.
4. Export the swatches using the Swatches panel command such as Export Selected Swatches. In Illustrator, use the Swatches panel menu and Save Swatch Library as ASE; exact labels vary by application version.
5. Save the palette with an .ase filename, then import it into the receiving application and verify the color mode and swatch values.

Aseprite and similar sprite editors are appropriate for the other meaning of .ase, but they are not the correct tools for creating an Adobe Swatch Exchange palette.

Quality and compatibility limits

A PNG can contain thousands of colors, while a practical ASE palette usually contains a selected subset. Photographs, gradients, shadows, and textured illustrations therefore cannot be represented exactly by a small set of swatches.

Anti-aliased edges and compression artifacts can create many unwanted intermediate colors. For a brand or interface palette, sample solid interior regions, remove near-duplicate colors, and name the final swatches manually. Transparent pixels do not provide visible colors and should not be treated as palette entries.

Color values and their appearance can differ when the PNG and destination document use different ICC profiles or working spaces. Check whether the palette is intended for RGB, CMYK, Lab, or spot-color work, and confirm the destination document's profile before approving print colors.

Some applications import ASE files only partially. Group structure, spot-color information, swatch names, or newer application-specific metadata may not survive transfer. Test the exported palette in the exact software and document where it will be used.
