Convert PNG to CDT

A CorelDRAW user may need a CDT file when a PNG must become part of a reusable template for stationery, labels, certificates, or other standardized layouts. This operation places the bitmap in a CorelDRAW template; it does not convert the PNG into editable vector artwork.

What the PNG format is

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a raster format that stores pixels with lossless compression and can preserve transparency through an alpha channel. Web browsers, screenshot tools, scanners, Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, Affinity Photo, and drawing applications commonly create or export PNG files. A PNG normally contains a single bitmap rather than separately editable text, shapes, or other graphic objects.

What the CDT format is

CDT is the native CorelDRAW template format. A CDT can store page dimensions, orientation, guides, styles, master-page settings, text, vector objects, and placed bitmap graphics for reuse in new CorelDRAW documents. It is suitable for layouts that must retain the same structure across multiple files.

CDT is not a general-purpose image format and is not normally opened by image viewers. Compatibility depends on the CorelDRAW version and on whether the recipient has software that supports CDT templates.

How to create a CDT from a PNG

1. Open CorelDRAW and create a document with the required page size, orientation, units, and color settings.
2. Choose File → Import, select image.png, and place it on the page. Dragging the file into the document may also work.
3. Set the bitmap's position and size. Preserve its aspect ratio unless intentional distortion is required. If CorelDRAW offers a link or embed choice, embed the bitmap when the template must work without the original PNG.
4. Add the reusable elements required by the template, such as text, guides, logos, vector shapes, and page settings.
5. Use File → Save as Template and save the file with a name such as template.cdt. In versions without that command, use File → Save As and select CorelDRAW Template (*.CDT) as the file type.
6. Reopen the CDT and check the bitmap, transparency, page dimensions, fonts, and any linked assets before sending it to another computer.

CorelDRAW Graphics Suite is the most dependable desktop option because CDT is its native template format. Inkscape, Photoshop, and GIMP can edit the PNG, but they do not provide dependable native CDT export. Online services such as CloudConvert and Convertio are useful for converting PNG to common image formats, but general online converters do not reliably create valid CorelDRAW templates; uploading artwork also sends it to a third-party server.

Quality and compatibility limits

Putting a PNG in a CDT does not increase its resolution or make its pixels independently editable. The bitmap's source dimensions determine the maximum practical output size; enlarge it only while maintaining the resolution required for the intended print size.

If the artwork needs unlimited scaling, recoloring, or editing by individual elements, recreate it as vector artwork or use CorelDRAW's Bitmaps → Outline Trace before saving the template. Automatic tracing can add excessive nodes, change edge detail, and produce inaccurate transparency or colors.

Linked bitmaps can disappear when their file path changes, so embedding is safer for distribution. Save the CDT in a CorelDRAW version compatible with the recipient. Supply required fonts if text must remain editable; convert text to curves only when font independence is more important than future text editing.
