How to convert png to wmf file

Older Windows publishing, diagramming, CAD, and Microsoft Office workflows may require WMF instead of PNG. Conversion also creates a WMF copy for archives or document exchange, but it does not automatically turn raster pixels into editable vector artwork.

What the PNG format is

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a raster format that stores an image as pixels. It uses lossless compression and supports indexed color, grayscale, true color, and up to 16 bits per color channel, with optional alpha transparency.

Web browsers, operating systems, screenshots, scanners, office applications, and graphics editors such as GIMP, Photoshop, Affinity Photo, Krita, and Paint.NET commonly create PNG files. PNG suits screenshots, interface graphics, logos, diagrams, and other sharp pixel-based artwork, but it does not store editable vector paths.

What the WMF format is

WMF (Windows Metafile) is a legacy Windows graphics format that stores drawing commands for lines, curves, shapes, text, fills, and bitmap objects. It was used by older Windows applications, Microsoft Office documents, desktop-publishing programs, and technical drawing software.

Vector commands in a WMF can be rendered at different sizes without the pixelation caused by enlarging a raster image. A WMF can also contain an embedded bitmap, so converting a PNG to WMF may simply package the original pixels inside a metafile rather than produce vector geometry. WMF has weaker support for transparency, color management, effects, and metadata than SVG or PDF.

How to convert PNG to WMF

Using the built-in converter

On 101convert.com, you can convert the file for free without installing software. Upload the .png file, select WMF as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting .wmf file. A direct conversion normally retains the PNG as raster content; it does not create editable vector paths unless the converter specifically performs tracing.

Using LibreOffice Draw

  1. Open LibreOffice Draw and create a blank drawing.
  2. Choose Insert → Image and select the PNG.
  3. Resize and position the image without changing its aspect ratio.
  4. Choose File → Export.
  5. Select WMF - Windows Metafile as the file type, use a filename ending in .wmf, and save.

Draw generally embeds the raster image in the WMF instead of tracing it. Check the exported file for page-sized whitespace or unwanted objects if the destination expects only the image.

Creating vector paths with Inkscape

  1. Open Inkscape and choose File → Import to place the PNG.
  2. Select the image and choose Path → Trace Bitmap.
  3. Choose a tracing method: Brightness cutoff suits monochrome artwork, while color tracing suits simple colored graphics.
  4. Apply the trace, move the result away from the original, and delete the PNG if the vector result is correct.
  5. Inspect the paths at high magnification, then choose File → Save a Copy or File → Save As and select Windows Metafile if that format is available in the installed Inkscape build.

Tracing works best for simple logos, icons, and line drawings. Photographs, textures, gradients, antialiased edges, and shadows can produce inaccurate shapes or excessive nodes. A traced result may also require manual cleanup before export.

Quality and compatibility limits

Embedding the PNG in a WMF does not increase its resolution or make its pixels editable. Print quality depends on the PNG's pixel dimensions and its final physical size; use the highest-resolution original available.

WMF has limited native support for alpha transparency. Transparent areas, soft edges, gradients, and shadows may be flattened, replaced with a background color, or rendered differently by older applications. Test the file in the exact program that will open or print it.

WMF is less portable than SVG or PDF, and modern applications may support only part of its command set. Keep the original PNG and, when possible, a modern editable source such as SVG or PDF alongside the WMF copy.
