Free online EMZ to WMF converter

A WMF file is required by some older Windows graphics and publishing software that cannot open compressed EMZ files. Converting the file also makes the underlying vector artwork easier to edit, exchange, or archive.

What the EMZ format is

EMZ is a gzip-compressed Enhanced Metafile. Its uncompressed payload is normally an EMF graphics file containing vector drawing commands, text, fills, lines, and sometimes embedded raster images.

Microsoft Office applications such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Visio, and Publisher commonly create or embed EMZ files when Windows metafile graphics are stored in a compressed form. You may encounter them in extracted Office documents, application caches, document assets, and graphics copied from older Windows software.

What the WMF format is

WMF, or Windows Metafile, is an older Windows vector graphics format. It is supported by many legacy Microsoft and desktop-publishing applications and is useful when a program accepts WMF but does not recognize EMF or EMZ.

WMF can store scalable lines, shapes, text, and bitmap data, so it is usually more suitable than a screenshot when the source is vector artwork. It is an older format, however, and has fewer drawing features than EMF.

How to convert EMZ to WMF

Using 101convert.com

1. Open the free converter on 101convert.com.
2. Upload the .emz file.
3. Select WMF as the output format and start the conversion.
4. Download the resulting .wmf file and open it in the target graphics or publishing program.

This method requires no software installation. Keep the original EMZ file if the output needs visual verification or later conversion to another format.

Using desktop software

1. Decompress the EMZ container with 7-Zip. Extracting diagram.emz normally produces an EMF file; if the extracted file has no extension, rename it to diagram.emf.
2. Open the extracted EMF in LibreOffice Draw using File → Open.
3. Export it with File → Export, select WMF - Windows Metafile as the file type, choose a destination, and save.

On systems with gzip and LibreOffice installed, the same operation can be scripted:

soffice --headless --convert-to wmf --outdir converted diagram.emf

The output directory must already exist. If LibreOffice does not expose a WMF export filter in the installed build, use the Draw interface or another Windows-metafile-capable graphics editor.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Because EMZ normally contains EMF data, decompression itself does not reduce quality. The conversion from EMF to WMF can reduce fidelity because WMF has an older instruction set and may not represent EMF or EMF+ features such as advanced gradients, alpha transparency, clipping, transformations, or certain text effects.

Text may change appearance if the original fonts are missing; convert text to outlines before export when the source application supports that option and exact typography matters. Inspect the WMF at its intended size, especially when it contains transparent objects, gradients, rotated text, or embedded bitmap images.
