Free online PDF to WMF converter

Some legacy Windows, reporting, and document-template programs import a graphic only as a WMF file and reject PDF pages. Conversion creates a single Windows graphic for placement in that software; it does not make the original PDF a fully editable document.

PDF and WMF formats

PDF (Portable Document Format) is a fixed-layout document format created by Adobe and standardized as ISO 32000. Publishers, offices, scanners, browsers, CAD systems, and print workflows use PDF because it can preserve page geometry, fonts, vector artwork, raster images, and print settings across operating systems.

WMF (Windows Metafile) is a legacy Microsoft Windows graphics format based on GDI drawing records. It can contain vector instructions for lines, shapes, and text, as well as bitmap data, and is usually used as a single graphic rather than as a multipage document.

WMF is mainly required by older Windows applications, Office templates, reporting tools, and clipboard-oriented workflows. Vector-based WMF artwork can scale more cleanly than a screenshot, but WMF supports far fewer graphics features than PDF.

Use WMF only when the receiving software requires it. If that software accepts EMF, SVG, PNG, or PDF, use its preferred format instead. EMF is generally the more capable Windows metafile format.

Convert a PDF to WMF

1. Open the PDF-to-WMF converter on 101convert.com.
2. Upload the PDF and select WMF as the output format.
3. Start the conversion and download the WMF result.
4. Open the downloaded file in the program that will receive it and compare it with the source page.

A PDF may contain many pages, while a WMF normally represents one canvas. If the source has multiple pages, convert the required page or pages individually when page selection is available; do not expect one WMF file to retain the PDF's document structure, bookmarks, forms, or page sequence.

If only a chart, logo, or diagram is needed, convert the page containing that item rather than the complete document. Crop the source before conversion when the destination application needs only part of the page.

Desktop conversion options

For local work or manual cleanup, use software that can both import PDF and export WMF. CorelDRAW is a common desktop option: import the required PDF page, review font and page-import settings, then use File → Export and select WMF.

LibreOffice Draw can also open many PDFs and export a drawing as WMF through File → Export, but complex PDF artwork may import imperfectly. Check the exported file in the destination program, because a graphics viewer may render a WMF differently from an older Office or reporting application.

Adobe Illustrator and Inkscape should not be assumed to provide WMF export in current standard installations. They can be useful for editing imported artwork or producing SVG, PDF, and other formats, but WMF support depends on the installed version and extensions.

Quality and compatibility limits

A conversion can preserve vector paths only when the source page contains vector artwork and the converter can map those objects to WMF records. Many PDFs include scanned pages, photographs, or raster charts; these become bitmap content inside the WMF file and will lose sharpness when enlarged.

PDF features that WMF cannot represent reliably include transparency, blend modes, gradients, clipping masks, layers, annotations, interactive forms, complex color management, and advanced typography. A converter may flatten, simplify, substitute, or rasterize those elements.

Fonts are a frequent source of visual changes. If the target computer lacks a font used by the PDF, text can reflow or be substituted. For appearance-critical vector artwork, convert text to outlines in a desktop editor before exporting when editable text is not required.

Do not treat the .wmf extension as proof that the file contains editable vectors. Some conversion paths place a rendered bitmap in a WMF container. This remains suitable for software that merely requires WMF, but it does not provide resolution-independent scaling or editable drawing objects.

Inspect thin rules, symbols, text, dimensions, page bounds, transparent areas, and color after import. When visual similarity matters more than editability, a high-resolution rasterized result may be more dependable; when editable paths are required, expect manual repair of complex artwork.
