The .svgz extension usually means the SVG content is compressed with gzip, which reduces file size while keeping the same vector data and structure as SVG. Designers, web developers, and technical illustrators commonly use SVGZ when they want compact vector graphics for web delivery or storage.

Target format

WMF (Windows Metafile) is a classic Windows vector graphics format used by some Microsoft Office applications, legacy Windows software, and older desktop publishing or illustration workflows. It can store vector shapes and, in some cases, bitmap data. The main advantage of WMF is its broad support in older Windows-centric environments and office documents. It is often used when a vector graphic must be inserted into software that does not accept SVG directly.

How to perform the conversion

The most reliable approach is to use a desktop vector graphics editor that can open SVG/SVGZ and export WMF. Inkscape is usually the best choice because it handles SVG-based artwork well and can export to several legacy formats.

1. Open the SVGZ file in Inkscape. If the file does not open directly, rename it to .svg after decompressing it with a gzip-capable tool, then open the SVG.
2. Check the artwork for unsupported effects, filters, or fonts. If needed, convert text to paths and simplify complex effects before exporting.
3. Choose File → Save As or File → Export, depending on the version of Inkscape you use.
4. Select WMF as the output format and save the file.
5. Open the resulting .wmf file in the target application, such as Microsoft Office or another Windows graphics program, to verify the result.

If you prefer command-line workflows, you can also use ImageMagick or LibreOffice in some cases, but support for SVGZ-to-WMF conversion is less consistent than with Inkscape. For best fidelity, use a vector editor that preserves paths and shapes rather than rasterizing the artwork.

Notes on quality and compatibility

SVGZ and WMF are not equally capable formats. SVGZ is modern, standards-based, and supports advanced features such as gradients, transparency, clipping, and rich text styling. WMF is older and more limited, so some SVG features may be lost or approximated during conversion. Common issues include font substitution, missing filters, flattened transparency, and simplified gradients.

For best results, use artwork with simple vector shapes, solid fills, and standard fonts. If the SVGZ contains complex effects, the WMF output may look different from the original. Also note that WMF is primarily a Windows legacy format; if the destination software supports it, EMF is often a better modern alternative, but WMF remains useful when the target application specifically requires it.
