How to convert ps to wmf file

Legacy Windows software, Office templates, and reporting systems may require a .wmf graphic instead of PostScript. A conversion creates a compatibility copy that can remain vector-based when the PS artwork uses features supported by WMF.

What PS files contain

PS (PostScript) is Adobe’s page-description language for printers, publishing, technical graphics, and prepress. It describes pages using vector paths, text, images, colors, and drawing instructions; PostScript files commonly use .ps, while Encapsulated PostScript files use .eps.

Adobe Illustrator, CorelDRAW, CAD and scientific applications, print workflows, and PostScript printer drivers can produce PostScript. A PS file can contain multiple pages and may depend on installed or embedded fonts, supplied images, printer settings, and PostScript-specific procedures.

What WMF files are for

WMF (Windows Metafile) is an older Microsoft graphics format based on Windows GDI drawing records. A .wmf file can store lines, shapes, fills, text, and bitmap operations, making it suitable for simple illustrations inserted into Windows applications.

WMF scales more cleanly than a screenshot when its content remains vector data and is widely supported by older Windows and Office-oriented workflows. It has significant limits: its graphics model predates modern transparency, color management, complex clipping, advanced gradients, and high-end typography. Use EMF instead when the receiving software accepts it; use WMF when the required application explicitly needs WMF.

Convert the file

  1. Open the converter on 101convert.com and upload the .ps file.
  2. Select WMF as the output format and start the conversion.
  3. Download the .wmf file.
  4. Insert or open the result in the program that requires it, then check its dimensions, text, line weights, and colors at the final display or print size.

A PS file with several pages must normally be converted page by page. WMF represents one graphic, not a multipage document format.

Local conversion with Inkscape

Inkscape can import many PostScript files when Ghostscript is installed and available to Inkscape. Open the source with File → Open, verify the imported artwork and page bounds, then use File → Save As and choose Windows Metafile (*.wmf) if that output option is present in the installed build.

Some Inkscape builds or operating systems do not provide a WMF export filter. In that case, use the site converter for WMF output, or use a desktop application whose export options explicitly include WMF. Do not rename an .svg, .eps, or .emf file to .wmf; changing the extension does not convert its internal format.

Quality and compatibility limits

WMF cannot reproduce all PostScript constructs. Complex patterns, smooth shading, spot or DeviceN colors, ICC-based color handling, intricate clipping, and printer-specific PostScript features can be simplified, rasterized, or changed during conversion. Raster images within the PS file remain raster images; conversion cannot create additional detail.

If the destination computer lacks a required font, text can substitute incorrectly. Convert critical text to paths before export only when visual fidelity matters more than later text editing; in Inkscape, select the text and use Path → Object to Path. Keep an editable original because outlined text is no longer editable as text.

Fine strokes, dash patterns, rotated text, transparency-like effects, and overlapping objects need inspection in the destination application. If the WMF is rasterized, set the highest available output resolution and avoid enlarging it after insertion. Keep the original .ps, .eps, or native design file for editing and archival use.
