What the PS format is

In machine embroidery, PS commonly identifies a Pfaff-oriented stitch-design format. It stores digitized embroidery instructions such as needle coordinates, stitch order, color changes, and sometimes trim or stop information.

You may encounter PS files in older Pfaff-compatible embroidery libraries, design archives, and digitizing or conversion software. The file already contains machine stitches, so it is different from a photograph or a vector outline that still needs digitizing.

What the VP3 format is

VP3 is a stitch-based embroidery format used by Husqvarna Viking and Pfaff software and machines. It can contain multiple color blocks, stitch coordinates, stops, and design information needed for embroidery-machine transfer.

VP3 is useful when the target machine, embroidery editor, or USB-transfer workflow specifically supports VP3. It commonly provides better compatibility with newer Husqvarna Viking and Pfaff systems than an older PS file, but the correct hoop size and machine model still determine whether the design can be sewn.

How to actually convert PS to VP3

1. Make a backup of the original .ps file. Keep the original unchanged in case the converted file needs different stitch or color settings.
2. Open the PS-to-VP3 converter on 101convert.com. The site provides the conversion online for free, without installing software.
3. Upload the PS file, choose VP3 as the output format, and start the conversion.
4. Download the resulting .vp3 file. If the converter offers hoop, rotation, size, or thread-chart settings, select values supported by the destination machine before converting.
5. Open the VP3 file in compatible embroidery software and inspect the stitch simulation, design dimensions, color-change order, and hoop placement before transferring it to the machine.

A desktop embroidery editor can also perform the conversion when online processing is unsuitable: import the PS file, verify the design in the editor, then use File → Save as or File → Export and select VP3. Use software that explicitly lists PS import and VP3 export; general image editors cannot interpret embroidery stitch data.

Quality and compatibility limits

Because both formats describe stitches, a direct conversion normally retains the basic stitch path, but it may alter unsupported commands, trims, appliqué stops, thread colors, or design metadata. The VP3 file may display equivalent colors using a different thread brand or palette.

Check the converted design’s stitch count, dimensions, hoop limits, needle sequence, and thread changes. A design that exceeds the machine’s hoop area may need splitting, and a design with excessive density or long jumps may require editing rather than simple format conversion. Sew a test sample when the output contains small lettering, dense fills, satin columns, or critical trims.
