Free online PS to JEF converter

Janome embroidery machines require JEF files, so a Pfaff PS design must be converted before it can be loaded and stitched. Conversion is also useful when sharing a design with a Janome user or organizing designs for Janome-compatible software.

What the PS format is

In machine embroidery, PS is a legacy Pfaff embroidery design format containing stitch coordinates and design information for Pfaff-compatible embroidery systems. PS files are encountered in older Pfaff machine workflows and embroidery applications that support Pfaff designs; the extension does not refer to Adobe PostScript in this category.

A PS file generally stores the stitch sequence, color-change information, and basic design data. It may not contain complete thread-brand names, accurate color values, hoop metadata, or the detailed machine settings expected by newer formats.

What the JEF format is

JEF is Janome’s native embroidery format. Janome embroidery machines and Janome-compatible applications use it for stitch data, color changes, thread information, and design positioning.

JEF is appropriate when the output will be copied to a Janome machine or opened in software that specifically supports Janome designs. It is not a general interchange format: converting to JEF does not make a design compatible with every embroidery machine, and it does not automatically correct unsuitable hoop dimensions, stitch density, or thread paths.

How to actually convert PS to JEF

Using the built-in online converter

1. Open the PS-to-JEF converter on 101convert.com; no software installation is required.
2. Upload the Pfaff embroidery file with the .ps extension.
3. Choose JEF as the output format and start the conversion.
4. Download the resulting .jef file and copy it to the Janome machine’s supported USB media or open it in Janome-compatible embroidery software.
5. Preview the design before stitching and select the actual hoop size, fabric, stabilizer, and thread colors used for the project.

Using desktop embroidery software

In Embird, Wilcom software, or another embroidery editor, first verify that the installed version can import PS and export JEF. Use File → Open to import the PS file, check the design in the stitch or 3D preview, then use File → Save as or File → Export and select JEF. If the software asks for a Janome hoop, select the hoop that will be mounted on the machine before exporting.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Format conversion changes the file container and machine-specific data; it does not redigitize the design. The stitch count and sewing order may remain unchanged, while unsupported PS metadata, thread labels, trims, appliqué instructions, or stop commands may be dropped or translated.

Check the converted file for hoop size, rotation, design position, stitch count, color-change sequence, jump stitches, and maximum stitch length. A JEF file that opens successfully can still exceed the Janome machine’s hoop limits or produce poor results on the selected fabric. If the PS design contains dense fills, very small lettering, or long jumps, edit or redigitize those sections before stitching a test sample.
