What the PS format is

In machine embroidery, PS is a proprietary Pfaff embroidery design format. It stores digitized stitch instructions, thread colors, needle movement, and design dimensions for Pfaff-compatible embroidery systems. You may encounter PS files exported from older Pfaff software or supplied with Pfaff design collections.

PS is a production stitch format rather than a general-purpose image format: it does not contain a normal bitmap or vector illustration that can be edited like artwork.

What the XXX format is

XXX is a Singer embroidery design format used by compatible Singer machines and embroidery software. It stores stitch coordinates and thread-change information in a form recognized by that ecosystem.

XXX is useful when the destination machine specifically requires it, but it is not a universal interchange format. Some XXX variants have limited thread metadata, and the receiving machine may map colors using its own thread chart.

How to actually convert PS to XXX

For local conversion, use embroidery software that explicitly supports both Pfaff PS import and Singer XXX export. Quality and compatibility considerations

The conversion normally preserves stitch placement, but it can lose format-specific information such as thread-brand names, color codes, appliqué metadata, or machine-specific commands. Review the stitch count, dimensions, rotation, thread sequence, trims, jumps, and color stops before transferring the file.

Do not enlarge a PS design substantially during export: existing stitches remain distributed for the original size, so enlargement can produce sparse coverage. If the design must change size significantly, resize and recalculate stitches in digitizing software instead of treating the conversion as a simple image resize.

XXX support varies among Singer models. Confirm the required hoop size, maximum file size, filename rules, USB structure, and supported thread-change behavior in the machine manual. Open the converted file in an embroidery editor and run a simulation; for valuable fabric, sew a test sample using the intended stabilizer, fabric, needle, and thread.
