What the DAT format is

In machine embroidery, .dat commonly identifies a Barudan embroidery design file. It stores stitch coordinates and machine instructions, including needle movement, color changes, and sometimes trims or other machine-specific commands.

You may encounter DAT files after exporting from Barudan design software, downloading a design prepared for a Barudan machine, or copying files from an embroidery-machine storage device. The extension is not a universal embroidery standard, so DAT files from different software versions or machine families may not be interchangeable.

What the XXX format is

.xxx is a Singer/Compucon embroidery format containing the stitch data required by compatible Singer machines and embroidery applications. It is useful when a receiving machine or program accepts XXX but does not read Barudan DAT files.

XXX preserves the design as stitches rather than as editable artwork. It is therefore suitable for machine production and basic resizing or editing in embroidery software, but it cannot restore the original vector artwork, lettering settings, or object-level digitizing information.

If the program asks for a machine or hoop, select the target Singer/Compucon machine profile and the correct hoop size. Save a separate copy rather than overwriting the original DAT file.

Quality and compatibility limitations

DAT-to-XXX conversion translates an existing stitch file; it does not improve stitch quality or recreate missing design objects. Check the converted file for altered color order, lost trims, jump stitches, appliqué commands, and differences in thread-change handling.

XXX has limited support for some machine-specific functions. Preview the design at its actual size, confirm that it fits the intended hoop, and run a test sew on similar fabric before production. If the DAT file cannot be opened, it may use a Barudan variant unsupported by the selected converter or may be damaged; obtain a compatible export from the original digitizing software.
