A machine cannot embroider the geometric contents of a CAD drawing directly; it needs a stitch file containing needle movement, stitch length, and color changes. Conversion is therefore useful when a DWG design must be prepared for a Singer or Compucon-compatible machine that accepts XXX files.

What the DWG format is

DWG is primarily a CAD drawing format associated with AutoCAD and compatible drafting programs. It stores geometric objects such as lines, arcs, polylines, dimensions, layers, and blocks rather than embroidery stitches. DWG is not a standardized machine-embroidery format, so a file with this extension must be checked in the program that created it; some specialized design applications may use DWG for a proprietary drawing or project file.

An AutoCAD DWG cannot normally be converted directly into a usable embroidery pattern. Its outlines must first be interpreted and digitized as fills, satin columns, or running stitches.

What the XXX format is

XXX is a stitch-based embroidery format associated with Compucon and Singer machines and software. It records needle coordinates, stitch commands, trims or jumps where supported, and thread color-change information.

XXX is suitable when the target machine or embroidery application explicitly supports Compucon/Singer files. It is not a general-purpose vector format: after export, changing an outline or resizing the design can alter stitch density, pull compensation, and registration.

How to convert DWG to XXX

First determine which kind of DWG you have:

  • If it opens in AutoCAD, DraftSight, BricsCAD, or another CAD program, treat it as vector artwork and digitize it.
  • If it opens only in a particular embroidery application, use that application's native import and export functions; the extension may represent a proprietary embroidery project rather than a standard stitch file.

For an AutoCAD-type DWG, use this workflow:

  1. Open the file in AutoCAD, DraftSight, BricsCAD, or another DWG-compatible CAD program.
  2. Remove dimensions, construction lines, duplicate geometry, hatches, and layers that should not be embroidered.
  3. Export the cleaned artwork as DXF or SVG, if the digitizing software supports either format. Use a true-scale export and confirm the drawing units before exporting.
  4. Open the exported artwork in embroidery digitizing software such as Wilcom EmbroideryStudio, Hatch Embroidery, Embird Studio, or Brother PE-Design.
  5. Assign each closed region a stitch type: fill stitch for broad areas, satin stitch for narrow columns, and running stitch for outlines. Set stitch angle, density, underlay, pull compensation, trims, and color order.
  6. Simulate the pattern and inspect the stitch count, jumps, overlaps, minimum satin width, and final dimensions.
  7. Use File → Export or Save as, select XXX, and save the resulting file with a new filename.

If 101convert.com lists both formats for this conversion, upload the file, choose XXX as the output format, and download the result without installing software. This is appropriate only when the uploaded DWG is a supported embroidery design; a CAD drawing still requires digitizing because a format converter cannot infer reliable stitch settings from arbitrary geometry.

Quality and compatibility limits

XXX export is not lossless when the source contains only outlines. The digitizer must choose stitch direction, density, underlay, compensation, sequencing, and thread stops, so two applications can produce different stitch files from the same DWG.

Check the exported XXX on the target machine or its manufacturer’s preview software before production. Verify hoop size, design dimensions, thread colors, maximum stitch length, trims, jump handling, and the number of supported color changes. Keep the editable digitized project file, because XXX generally does not preserve the objects and settings needed for convenient editing.
