What the DWG format is

In machine embroidery, DWG is an embroidery-design format used by certain digitizing or design applications. It can store embroidery objects, stitch sequences, thread information, and design metadata, although the exact contents depend on the program that created it.

DWG is uncommon compared with DST, EXP, JEF, HUS, and PES, so the file extension alone does not identify a universal embroidery specification. Open the file in the application that created it when possible; a DWG from one embroidery program may not be readable by another program using the same extension.

What the PES format is

PES is a machine-embroidery format developed for Brother and compatible embroidery machines. It stores stitch coordinates, color changes, thread-color information, design dimensions, and other machine instructions.

PES is useful when a Brother machine, Brother embroidery software, or a compatible editing program specifically requests that format. It preserves machine-ready stitch data rather than merely storing a visual outline, so a successful conversion must interpret the source design's objects and sewing order.

How to actually convert DWG to PES

Using the built-in online converter

1. Make a backup of the original .dwg file.
2. Open the DWG to PES converter on 101convert.com; the service can convert the file for free without installing software.
3. Upload the embroidery-design file, choose PES as the output format, and start the conversion.
4. Download the resulting .pes file and open it in Brother software or an embroidery editor before copying it to the machine.

If the converter rejects the file, the DWG may belong to a different embroidery application, use a version that the converter does not support, or contain project data rather than an exportable stitch design. Export it from the source application to a commonly supported embroidery format first, then convert that file to PES.

Using embroidery software

1. Open the file in the originating digitizing program or an embroidery editor that explicitly supports this DWG variant.
2. Check the design's hoop dimensions, object order, stitch density, underlay, trims, jump stitches, and thread chart.
3. Use File → Export or File → Save as, select PES, and choose the PES version required by the Brother machine.
4. Preview the exported file in stitch view, then transfer it to the machine using the manufacturer's supported media or connection method.

General-purpose CAD software is not suitable for this task: a DWG handled as an AutoCAD drawing is not the same as a machine-embroidery DWG and will not contain usable stitch instructions.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Conversion does not automatically improve digitizing. If the source contains only outlines or embroidery objects without finalized stitch parameters, the export program must generate stitches; density, pull compensation, underlay, satin width, and sewing order can therefore change.

Before stitching, verify the hoop size, design width and height, number of color changes, thread sequence, needle stops, and maximum stitch length. A PES file that exceeds the machine's hoop or format-version limits may open in software but fail on the machine.

Use a preview or simulator and, for a production design, test-stitch it on the intended fabric with the intended stabilizer. Inspecting the PES file only as an image will not reveal every problem with trims, excessive jumps, thread breaks, or fabric distortion.
