How to convert dst to pes file

A Brother, Baby Lock, or compatible embroidery machine may require a PES file when the available design is a DST file. The conversion repackages the stitch instructions for the target machine format, but it cannot restore color assignments or editable digitizing data absent from the original.

What the DST format contains

DST is Tajima’s widely used embroidery stitch format. Commercial embroidery shops, industrial Tajima-compatible machines, design libraries, and digitizing software commonly use .dst files because the format is broadly supported across embroidery systems.

A DST file stores stitch movement and control records, including jumps and color-change positions, plus a small header. It does not reliably retain thread brand or color assignments, artwork, vector paths, lettering settings, fabric settings, underlay objects, or other original digitizing information. Trim handling is also commonly inferred by software or machines from jump sequences rather than preserved as rich edit data.

Opening a DST in embroidery software provides a reconstructed stitch design. It does not recover the original editable source file, such as an .EMB, .OFM, or native digitizing-project file.

What the PES format adds

PES is Brother’s proprietary embroidery format and is also used by many Baby Lock machines. It stores the stitch design in a form expected by Brother-compatible equipment and can carry a color sequence for machine stops and software display.

PES is useful when a machine, its USB workflow, or its accompanying software accepts PES but not DST. PES has multiple format versions; a file accepted by one Brother or Baby Lock model may not be accepted by an older model. Select the PES version specified in the machine manual when the conversion software offers that setting.

Convert the file

  1. Upload the .dst design to the free converter on 101convert.com.
  2. Select PES as the output format, run the conversion, and download the resulting .pes file.
  3. Open the PES file in embroidery software or inspect it on the machine screen before stitching.
  4. Copy the tested file to USB media using the folder location, filename rules, and PES version required by the machine manual. Many Brother models read designs from the USB drive’s root folder, but this is model-dependent.

Use desktop embroidery software when the design needs inspection or machine-specific export settings. Brother PE-Design, Hatch Embroidery, Wilcom EmbroideryStudio, Embrilliance, and SewWhat-Pro can generally open DST designs and save or export PES. Ink/Stitch can also import and export embroidery formats, but imported DST stitches remain stitch data rather than restored editable objects.

In the desktop program, open the DST file, check the design preview and color-change sequence, then use the application’s File → Save As or File → Export command to create a new .pes file. Preserve the original file and use a distinct output name such as logo_brother.pes.

Check before stitching

Conversion does not improve a poorly digitized design. Excessive stitch density, unsuitable underlay, long jumps, tiny lettering, poor pull compensation, and fabric-specific problems remain in the PES output.

DST records color-change locations but normally lacks dependable thread colors. The converter or embroidery program may apply generic palette colors, so compare every color stop with the design’s thread chart and assign the intended threads at the machine.

Verify the design dimensions, stitch count, orientation, color-stop count, and selected hoop. A design outside the hoop can be rejected or cropped by the machine. Large stitch-file resizing changes density and may require recalculated underlay and a test sew-out.

Do not rename design.dst to design.pes. Changing the extension does not change the internal embroidery format and usually produces a file the machine cannot read.
