Free online DST to JPG converter

Embroidery machines and design programs use DST files as stitch instructions, while documents, websites, and image viewers usually require JPG for a visual preview. Converting the file creates a shareable image for approval, documentation, or archiving, but it does not create a replacement embroidery file.

What the DST format is

DST is a stitch-based embroidery format associated with Tajima equipment and widely supported by commercial and home embroidery software. It stores encoded needle movements and control commands such as jumps, color changes, and the end of the design; it does not store ordinary pixels.

Wilcom, Hatch Embroidery, Embird, Pulse, and Ink/Stitch can open or work with DST designs. Machine operators use DST files to transfer stitch plans to compatible embroidery machines.

DST files generally contain little or no dependable thread-color information. Software therefore assigns default colors or applies a selected thread chart when rendering the design. The .dst extension can also identify an old Micrografx Designer template, which is a different format. A file from that application must be opened with compatible legacy graphics software rather than embroidery software.

What the JPG format is

JPG, also called JPEG, is a lossy compressed raster-image format supported by web browsers, office applications, phones, and general-purpose image viewers. It produces relatively small files for sending an embroidery preview, placing the design in a document, or keeping a visual reference.

JPG stores rendered pixels, not stitches. It cannot preserve stitch order, needle commands, jumps, trims, color-change stops, machine settings, underlay, stitch density, or editable embroidery objects. JPG also does not support transparent backgrounds; use a white or other solid background when exporting.

How to convert DST to JPG

4. Open the JPG and check that the entire design, lettering, and rendered thread colors are visible.

This method requires no installed software and is suitable when the required result is a visual preview rather than editable stitch data. Do not upload confidential, customer-owned, or licensed designs unless the service's file-handling terms are acceptable.

Export from embroidery software

1. Open the DST in compatible embroidery software such as Wilcom, Hatch Embroidery, Embird, Pulse, or Ink/Stitch.
2. Display a rendered stitch preview rather than a wireframe or outline-only view. Select the intended thread chart and set the design scale before exporting.
3. Use the program's image command, commonly File → Export or File → Save As, and select JPG if available.
4. Set the pixel dimensions or resolution. For a printed reference, 150–300 dpi is generally sufficient; detailed lettering may require a larger pixel canvas.
5. Choose a solid background, save the file with a distinct name such as design-preview.jpg, and inspect it at full size.

If the embroidery application cannot export JPG, export its rendered preview as PNG and convert that PNG to JPG with an installed image editor. PNG is preferable during intermediate editing because it avoids additional lossy compression. A screenshot should be a last resort because it can include interface controls and produce an unsuitable size.

Quality and compatibility limitations

The JPG is an interpretation of the stitch plan, so its appearance can vary between programs. Differences in thread charts, stitch rendering, scaling, jump-stitch display, and handling of color-change commands can alter the preview. A DST that lacks color metadata cannot produce a guaranteed match to the threads used on the machine.

Keep the original .dst file for production. An embroidery machine cannot use a JPG as stitch data, and converting the image back to DST requires digitizing. Automatic tracing cannot reliably recover the original stitch density, underlay, pull compensation, sequence, trims, or machine-specific settings.
