Embroidery software and documentation workflows sometimes require a bitmap preview rather than machine-readable stitch instructions. Converting a DST file to BMP renders the design for viewing, printing, sharing, or editing in a raster-image program.

What the DST format is

In embroidery, DST is the Tajima machine format. It stores stitch coordinates, jumps, stops, and color-change commands for commercial and consumer embroidery machines. Digitizing applications such as Wilcom, Hatch Embroidery, Embird, and Brother PE-Design can create or edit DST designs.

DST is not an ordinary image format. It generally does not preserve complete information about thread brands, exact thread colors, fabric, stitch appearance, or rendering settings. The software must interpret the stitch sequence and draw a preview before an image file can be created.

The .dst extension is not completely unambiguous: some legacy graphics applications also used it for document or template files. Confirm that the file is a Tajima embroidery design before using an embroidery converter.

What the BMP format is

BMP is a raster-image format widely supported by Windows, image editors, office software, and older production systems. It normally stores pixels without lossy compression and can contain indexed-color, grayscale, or full-color images.

BMP is appropriate when the receiving program specifically requires it or when exact pixel data is preferred over JPEG compression. BMP files are usually larger than PNG files, so PNG is often better for general sharing or web use.

How to convert DST to BMP

1. Open the DST-to-BMP converter on 101convert.com; it can be used without installing desktop software.
2. Select or upload the embroidery .dst file.
3. Choose BMP as the output format and start the conversion.
4. Download the generated .bmp file and open it in a bitmap viewer or editor.

The converter must render the stitch path to create the bitmap. The result is therefore a visual preview, not a BMP containing editable stitches or machine instructions.

Using desktop embroidery software

1. Open the file in compatible embroidery software such as Wilcom, Hatch Embroidery, Embird, or another program that can display Tajima DST stitches.
2. Check the design orientation, hoop, scale, stitch colors, and background. DST color-change commands do not reliably identify a thread brand or exact color.
3. Use the program's preview or image-export function, commonly found under File → Export, Save As, or a similarly named command. Select BMP if the program offers it.
4. Set the output pixel dimensions or resolution before exporting. Use more pixels when the preview will be printed or enlarged.

If the embroidery program exports PNG but not BMP, export the rendered preview as PNG, open it in an image editor such as GIMP, Paint, or Photoshop, then use File → Save As or File → Export and select BMP. This changes the image container; it does not recreate stitch data.

Quality and compatibility limits

• The BMP contains only the rendered appearance. It cannot drive an embroidery machine or be converted back into the original stitch sequence without redigitizing.
• Because DST files commonly lack thread-brand and exact-color metadata, different programs may use different palette colors or render the design with generic colors.
• Underlay, stitch spacing, trims, jumps, thread thickness, scaling, and background settings affect the preview. Two applications can produce different BMP images from the same DST file.
• Use a solid background when the receiving application does not support transparency. BMP transparency and alpha-channel handling vary by bitmap variant and software.
• Choose a 24-bit BMP for broad compatibility unless the target program specifically requires indexed-color, grayscale, or monochrome output.
