Free online PHC to PES converter

A Brother embroidery machine or design editor may require .pes when the available design is stored as .phc. Converting it creates a file suitable for PES-based transfer, editing, or machine loading.

What the PHC format is

PHC is a Brother home-embroidery format associated with PE-Design and older Brother embroidery workflows. It stores embroidery instructions such as stitch coordinates, color blocks, sequencing data, and design dimensions rather than ordinary image pixels.

Renaming .phc to .pes does not convert the file. Software must read the PHC stitch data and write it in the PES structure.

What the PES format is

PES is Brother’s widely supported embroidery format. Brother machines, PE-Design, Embird, and other compatible embroidery applications can use PES files for stitch data, color changes, design dimensions, and related embroidery metadata.

PES is generally the appropriate output when the target machine, USB-transfer utility, or embroidery editor specifically requests .pes. Compatibility still depends on the PES revision, hoop size, stitch limits, and machine model.

How to convert PHC to PES

Using 101convert

1. Open the PHC-to-PES converter on 101convert.com.
2. Upload the original .phc file; do not upload a file merely renamed with a different extension.
3. Choose PES as the output format and start the conversion.
4. Download the resulting .pes file.
5. Open the PES file in compatible embroidery software and check it before transferring it to the machine.

101convert can convert the file without installing desktop software. Do not upload confidential or commercially restricted designs unless the service’s handling terms are acceptable, and retain the original PHC file in case a different PES version or later edit is needed.

Using desktop embroidery software

If installed software supports PHC import, open the file with File → Open, then use File → Save As or File → Export and select PES. Brother PE-Design and some third-party embroidery editors can perform this operation, but support varies by product and version; confirm that the program can import PHC before relying on it.

After export, reopen the PES file and verify the hoop setting, physical dimensions, stitch count, color sequence, and thread-change positions. If the machine rejects the file, resave it in a PES revision and hoop configuration supported by that machine.

Quality and compatibility limits

Conversion transfers existing stitch instructions; it does not redigitize or improve the design. Excessive density, inadequate underlay, very small details, unsuitable stitch lengths, and other digitizing problems remain in the PES output.

Thread colors may be mapped to approximate palette entries rather than the exact thread brands or shades used in the PHC file. Assign the intended thread palette in the embroidery editor when color matching matters.

A file can convert successfully yet fail on a machine because its hoop area, stitch count, color-change count, file size, or PES revision exceeds that model’s limits. Check the machine specification and test-stitch the design on sample fabric before using the final material.
