How to convert pes to dst file

A commercial embroidery machine or production shop may require Tajima DST even when a design was supplied as a Brother-compatible PES file. Converting it provides a widely supported machine file, but the result must be checked because DST does not preserve every PES attribute.

What the PES format is

PES is an embroidery-design format associated with Brother and Baby Lock machines. It can contain stitch coordinates, color blocks, thread information, design dimensions, and, depending on the version and software, lettering or other design metadata. PES is common in home-embroidery workflows and is supported by software such as Brother PE-Design, Hatch Embroidery, Embird, Wilcom products, and Ink/Stitch.

What the DST format is

DST is the compact Tajima stitch format used by many commercial and multi-needle embroidery machines. It records stitch and movement commands plus color-change markers, so it is widely used for transferring designs between digitizing software and machines from Tajima, Barudan, Toyota, Melco, and other manufacturers.

DST has limited color and metadata support. A DST file normally does not preserve named thread brands, exact thread colors, editable lettering objects, or all machine-specific instructions from a PES file. The receiving software or machine usually assigns display colors based on the color-change sequence.

How to convert PES to DST

Using the built-in online converter

  1. Open the PES-to-DST converter on 101convert.com.
  2. Upload the .pes file.
  3. Choose DST as the output format and start the conversion.
  4. Download the resulting .dst file when processing is complete. The conversion is available free without installing software.
  5. Open the DST in embroidery software or a machine preview and check its size, stitch count, color-change sequence, and hoop position before production.

Using desktop embroidery software

In Ink/Stitch, open the design in Inkscape, then use Extensions → Ink/Stitch → Visualize and Export, select DST, and export the file. In Hatch Embroidery, Embird, Wilcom software, or comparable digitizing software, use File → Open to load the PES file, then use File → Export or File → Save As and select Tajima DST (*.dst).

If the software requests a machine profile, select the destination machine or a compatible generic profile. Confirm hoop size, scaling, trims, jump handling, maximum stitch length, and color-change settings before exporting. Menu names vary by program and version.

Quality and compatibility checks

  • Changing PES to DST does not improve digitizing. Poor density, unsuitable underlay, short stitches, excessive jumps, and badly placed trims remain in the exported design.
  • Review the design at its intended physical size. Large resizing can cause distorted details, incorrect stitch density, thread breaks, or needle damage; resize in digitizing software and recalculate stitches when supported.
  • Check the preview for hoop boundaries, total stitch count, color-change positions, first and last stitches, jump behavior, trims, and unusually long stitches. A machine may accept DST while still imposing limits on these values.
  • Do not rely on DST previews for exact thread colors. Restore the thread chart manually in the receiving software or machine when necessary.
  • Run a test sew on comparable fabric and stabilizer before production, especially when the design has been resized or contains small lettering.
  • Keep the original .pes file and its thread information. DST is primarily a machine-output and interchange format, not an ideal format for later object-level editing.
