What the PES format is

PES is an embroidery-machine format associated with Brother and compatible systems. It stores stitch commands, thread colors, needle changes, design dimensions, and machine-related metadata rather than ordinary vector paths.

Embroidery software such as Brother PE-Design, Hatch, Embird, and Wilcom can create or edit PES files. You encounter .pes files when downloading machine embroidery patterns or transferring designs to a Brother embroidery machine.

What the AI format is

AI is Adobe Illustrator's native vector format. It stores paths, fills, strokes, text, transparency, layers, and other artwork objects that can be edited without the fixed pixel resolution of a bitmap.

AI is useful for logos, print layouts, cutting artwork, packaging, and illustrations. It is preferable when the design must be resized, recolored, separated into layers, or edited in Illustrator.

How to actually convert PES to AI

Best-quality method: use the original artwork or manually trace the embroidery design. PES contains stitch information, not the clean vector shapes that an AI file requires, so a direct conversion cannot reliably reconstruct the original artwork.

1. Open design.pes in compatible embroidery software such as Hatch, Wilcom, Embird, or Brother PE-Design.
2. Display the design at its actual size and inspect its stitch sequence, thread colors, outlines, and fill regions.
3. If the original artwork is available, import that artwork into Illustrator instead of tracing the PES file.
4. If no artwork exists, export a large, high-resolution preview from the embroidery software, or take a screenshot with the design shown at its actual proportions.
5. Open the preview in Adobe Illustrator and trace it with Window → Image Trace, or redraw the shapes manually with the Pen tool. Separate major colors and outlines onto different layers.
6. Clean the resulting paths, remove unnecessary points, set the required fills and strokes, then choose File → Save As and select Adobe Illustrator (.ai).

Quality and compatibility limits

Stitch density, underlay, thread order, trims, jumps, and machine commands have no direct equivalent in a normal AI illustration. A converted AI file therefore represents the visible design, not the instructions needed to embroider it.

Small lettering, satin stitches, gradients, and dense overlapping regions are especially difficult to trace accurately. Preserve the original .pes file for machine production, and treat the AI file as artwork unless it has been redrawn and checked against the embroidery preview.
