What the HUS format is

HUS is an embroidery-machine format associated primarily with Husqvarna Viking and Pfaff systems. It stores machine instructions such as stitch coordinates, stitch order, color-change information, and jump or trim commands. Husqvarna Viking embroidery software and digitizing applications create HUS files, and you may also receive them from embroidery designers or find them on older machine-media archives.

HUS is not a general-purpose image format. It normally contains the final stitch plan, not editable lettering, filled vector shapes, Bézier curves, or the original digitizing layers. Some HUS variants also have limited or inconsistent support across embroidery programs.

What the AI format is

AI is Adobe Illustrator's native artwork format. It is designed for vector objects such as paths, fills, strokes, text, clipping masks, and gradients, so artwork can be resized without the pixelation associated with raster images. AI files are used for editing in Illustrator and for preparing artwork for print, cutting, signage, and other vector-based production workflows.

An HUS-to-AI conversion cannot normally produce the original vector design because HUS stores stitches. The resulting AI artwork will usually contain reconstructed stitch paths or a traced approximation of the visible embroidery, rather than clean, logically grouped shapes.

How to actually convert HUS to AI

Using Ink/Stitch and Inkscape

1. Install Inkscape and the Ink/Stitch extension on a desktop computer.
2. Import the HUS file through Extensions → Ink/Stitch → Tools: Import embroidery file, or use the import option provided by your installed Ink/Stitch version.
3. Inspect the imported stitch paths at high zoom. Remove excessive jumps and unwanted machine-travel lines if the file is intended as artwork rather than machine output.
4. Save an editable intermediate copy as design.svg using File → Save As.
5. Open design.svg in Adobe Illustrator. Check the scale, color assignments, path count, and stroke widths.
6. Save the result with File → Save As, choose Adobe Illustrator, and create design.ai. Enable PDF compatibility if Illustrator offers that option and the file must be opened by other Adobe applications.

Inkscape and Ink/Stitch are most suitable when the goal is to obtain visible stitch lines or a starting point for manual redrawing. For a cleaner production illustration, open the HUS file in dedicated embroidery software, use its stitch-view or outline tools to understand the design, and manually redraw the major shapes in Illustrator before saving as AI.

Thread colors may also be approximated from HUS color records and may not match the original thread brand or physical thread.

For a production-ready vector design, the best source is the original digitizing artwork, such as an SVG, EPS, PDF, or native embroidery-project file. If only HUS is available, retain the original HUS separately because an AI export cannot reliably be converted back into an equivalent machine-ready embroidery file; it may require fresh digitizing and testing on the target machine.
