Convert HUS to SHV

A Husqvarna Viking Designer 1 or another legacy embroidery system may accept an .shv file but not the supplied .hus design. Converting the file provides the format required by that machine or application without changing the embroidery into an editable source design.

What the HUS format is

HUS is a stitch-based machine-embroidery format associated with Husqvarna Viking machines and software. It stores stitch coordinates, color changes, and basic machine information rather than the original outlines, lettering objects, or digitizing settings. Husqvarna Viking owners, embroidery software users, design libraries, and digitizers commonly encounter HUS files.

What the SHV format is

SHV is a Husqvarna Viking stitch format used particularly by older Designer systems, including Designer 1, and by software that supports those machines. Its main advantage is compatibility with equipment that specifically requires SHV; it does not provide better stitch quality or restore editable objects removed when a design was saved as HUS.

How to convert HUS to SHV

Embird is a practical desktop option when its installed version lists both formats. Its Embird Manager can open common machine files and save them in another supported machine format.

1. Install Embird and open Embird Manager.
2. Load the .hus file with File → Open or the manager's file browser.
3. Inspect the preview, hoop dimensions, stitch count, color changes, trims, and sewing order. Confirm that the design fits the target machine.
4. Use File → Save As or the equivalent format-conversion command, select Husqvarna Viking .shv, and save a new file. Keep the original HUS unchanged.
5. Reopen the SHV in Embird or the target software and check the design again. Transfer it to removable media only according to the machine's documented folder, naming, and media requirements.

Hatch Embroidery can be used if the installed release shows both HUS as an import format and SHV as an export format. Open the design with File → Open, then use File → Export Design and choose SHV. Format support differs by release and edition, so verify the export list before relying on Hatch for this conversion.

For a non-confidential design, an online service such as Convertio can be considered only when its current format selector explicitly offers both HUS input and SHV output. Online support changes, and uploaded designs may be retained temporarily; use Embird or another local application for proprietary, paid, client-owned, or unpublished patterns. Downloaded results should be scanned and opened in embroidery software before being copied to a machine.

Quality and compatibility limits

Both formats are primarily stitch formats, so conversion changes the machine-file encoding rather than recreating the original digitizing project. It cannot reliably recover outlines, lettering, density settings, underlay, or other source data that was absent from the HUS file. Avoid resizing, recoloring, editing lettering, or changing density after conversion unless you have the original editable project; stitch-only editing can cause gaps, excessive density, or distorted details.

Before sewing, confirm the machine's supported SHV variant, maximum hoop size, filename restrictions, thread-color mapping, and media type. Preview the converted file on the machine or in compatible software and check for missing stitches, changed color stops, incorrect trims, and hoop overflow. Keep the HUS file and the native editable project so future changes do not depend on repeated conversions.
