What the HUS format is

HUS is a machine-embroidery design format associated primarily with Husqvarna Viking embroidery machines and software. It stores stitch coordinates, thread colors, needle movements, and design information used to sew a pattern.

HUS files are commonly created or exported by Husqvarna Viking PREMIER+ and mySewnet software, and can also be opened by compatible embroidery editors such as Embird. You usually encounter them when downloading a Husqvarna Viking design, transferring a design to an embroidery machine, or editing an existing stitch pattern.

What the GIF format is

GIF is a raster image format suitable for simple previews, diagrams, and web graphics. A converted embroidery design becomes a bitmap showing the rendered stitches; it does not retain stitch order, thread stops, hoop information, or machine-specific commands.

GIF supports a maximum of 256 colors per frame and can preserve transparent backgrounds. It is useful when a small, widely supported preview is more convenient than an embroidery file, but PNG generally gives better quality for detailed or multicolored designs.

How to actually convert HUS to GIF

Using the online converter

1. Open the HUS-to-GIF converter on 101convert.com.
2. Choose Upload or the file-selection control and select the .hus design.
3. Set GIF as the output format.
4. Start the conversion and download the generated .gif file when processing finishes.

The result is a static visual rendering. If the service offers size or background options, use a larger canvas for catalog images and a transparent background only when the target application handles GIF transparency correctly.

Using desktop embroidery software

1. Open the .hus file in a HUS-compatible embroidery editor, such as PREMIER+ 2 or Embird.
2. Check the hoop view, thread colors, and design orientation before exporting. Repair missing thread-color mappings or an incorrect hoop setting in the editor.
3. Use the program's image-preview or image-export command, commonly found under File → Export or File → Save as image, and save a PNG or BMP rendering.
4. Convert that raster image to GIF in an image editor, or with ImageMagick:

If the embroidery software cannot export an image, display the design at the required size and use its built-in export or screenshot function; do not rename .hus to .gif, because changing an extension does not change the file structure.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Small stitch details can disappear during GIF conversion because the design is rasterized and reduced to a 256-color palette. Export at the final required pixel dimensions or larger, then resize with a high-quality filter before creating the GIF.

Thread colors shown in the preview depend on the software's thread chart and may differ from the actual thread manufacturer or physical thread. The GIF also cannot communicate stitch density, underlay, trims, appliqué placement, or sewing order.

Keep the original .hus file for production. A GIF is appropriate for identification and sharing, not for loading into a machine or converting back into a reliable stitch file.
