Free online SHV to GIF converter

SHV files contain machine-embroidery stitch data, while GIF files are convenient raster images for previews, catalogs, websites, and quick sharing. Convert an SHV design to GIF when the recipient needs to see the embroidery without opening embroidery software; the GIF cannot be loaded into an embroidery machine as a stitch file.

What the SHV format is

SHV is a Husqvarna Viking machine-embroidery design format. It stores stitch commands and design information used by compatible Husqvarna Viking embroidery systems and software, including older 4D, 5D, 6D, and related design applications. SHV files are commonly encountered in collections made for Husqvarna Viking machines or exported from embroidery digitizing software.

The format describes needle movement, color changes, thread stops, and related embroidery instructions rather than a normal pixel image. A file viewer that only supports photographs or standard graphics therefore cannot display an SHV design directly.

What the GIF format is

GIF is a raster image format supported by web browsers, file managers, messaging applications, and cataloging tools. A converted embroidery GIF shows the design as a visual preview, which is useful for product listings, design indexes, email attachments, and quick identification.

GIF supports a maximum of 256 colors per image and can include transparency or animation, although an embroidery conversion normally produces a single static frame. It does not preserve stitch order, needle commands, thread-change instructions, hoop settings, or machine compatibility.

How to convert SHV to GIF

The simplest method is the SHV converter on 101convert.com, which runs in a web browser without installing software:

1. Open the SHV-to-GIF conversion page on 101convert.com.
2. Select Choose file or the upload control and add the .shv embroidery design.
3. Choose GIF as the output format if the page offers more than one format.
4. Start the conversion, then download the generated .gif file.
5. Open the GIF in a browser or image viewer and check that the design orientation, colors, and complete stitch area are visible.

If the SHV file contains information that the converter cannot render, open it first in compatible Husqvarna Viking embroidery software or another embroidery design editor that supports SHV, then export or save a preview as an image. Select GIF in the export dialog when available; otherwise export PNG and convert that image to GIF in an image editor. Do not rename design.shv to design.gif, because changing the extension does not convert the file data.

Quality and compatibility limitations

The output is a preview image, not a replacement embroidery design. Keep the original SHV file for editing, resizing, thread changes, and machine transfer.

GIF's 256-color limit can produce banding or less accurate thread colors, especially in designs with many shaded fills. Use a larger output size during conversion when the image will be printed or displayed in a catalog; enlarging a small GIF later cannot restore stitch detail. For better color and transparency quality, PNG is usually preferable when the receiving application accepts it.

Conversion software may render thread colors using a built-in palette rather than the exact thread brand specified by the SHV file. The preview can therefore differ from the sewn result, and it should not be used to verify stitch density, pull compensation, underlay, trim behavior, or machine hoop limits.
