Machine embroiderers use JPG when they need a shareable preview, catalog image, or reference picture from an SHV design. Because JPG stores pixels rather than stitch instructions, it is suitable for viewing and image editing but cannot be loaded into an embroidery machine as a sewable design.

What the SHV format is

SHV is a Husqvarna Viking machine-embroidery format containing stitch coordinates, thread colors, design dimensions, and other information required to sew a pattern. You may encounter it in older Husqvarna Viking design collections, on legacy embroidery-machine media, or in files produced by compatible Husqvarna Viking embroidery software.

An SHV file is intended for embroidery equipment or stitch-editing software, not for ordinary image viewers. Support varies by software version, so a program that opens newer Viking formats may not read every older SHV variant.

What the JPG format is

JPG, also called JPEG, is a compressed raster-image format supported by web browsers, phones, office applications, and image editors. It is useful for design previews, product listings, email attachments, printed reference sheets, and sharing embroidery artwork with people who do not have embroidery software.

JPG does not preserve stitch order, needle penetrations, thread-change commands, hoop settings, machine-specific data, or editable embroidery objects. Its colors represent a rendered preview of the design rather than guaranteed thread colors.

How to convert SHV to JPG

Quality and compatibility limitations

The exported image may not match the sewn result exactly. Actual thread sheen, fabric texture, stitch density, underlay, and color changes are not represented accurately by a flat JPG preview.
