Embroidery machines use PEC files for stitch instructions, while JPG is easier to view, share, print, and place in documents. Converting a PEC design to JPG creates a visual preview; it does not produce another machine-stitchable file.

What the PEC format is

PEC is a machine-embroidery format associated primarily with Brother embroidery machines and software such as PE-Design. It stores stitch coordinates, thread-color blocks, design size information, and often a small preview image. PEC files are used to transfer embroidery designs to compatible machines or embroidery applications, not as ordinary image files.

You may encounter PEC files after downloading Brother-compatible designs, exporting from embroidery software, or copying designs from a machine-management workflow. A PEC file cannot normally be opened correctly in a standard photo viewer because its main content describes needle movements rather than pixels.

What the JPG format is

JPG, also written JPEG, is a raster image format supported by virtually all operating systems, browsers, image editors, and office applications. It is suitable for showing an embroidery preview in a catalog, email, web page, printed worksheet, or design archive.

JPG uses lossy compression, so it produces smaller files than many lossless image formats. It is useful for the appearance of the design, but it does not preserve stitch order, needle commands, thread stops, hoop settings, or machine compatibility.

How to actually convert PEC to JPG

Export at the largest useful pixel dimensions when the image will be printed or enlarged. JPG compression can blur thin satin stitches and small lettering, and the rendered thread colors may differ from physical thread because software previews use screen color values. A transparent background is generally unavailable in JPG; use a format such as PNG when transparency or lossless detail is required.
