PEC designs are often converted to BMP when a catalog, document, editing program, or image viewer requires a standard bitmap preview instead of an embroidery stitch file. BMP preserves the visible design as an image, but it cannot be loaded into an embroidery machine as a stitch pattern.

What the PEC format is

PEC is a machine-embroidery format associated with Brother embroidery systems. It stores stitch coordinates, thread-change information, color data, design dimensions, and usually a small preview image. Brother PE-Design creates PEC files, and many embroidery applications can open or export them.

You typically encounter .pec files when downloading Brother-compatible designs, moving patterns between embroidery programs, or preparing a design for a compatible machine. PEC is intended for stitch production, not general-purpose image editing.

What the BMP format is

BMP is a raster image format that stores the design as colored pixels. It is supported by Windows image viewers, graphics editors, document software, and cataloging tools without requiring embroidery-specific software.

BMP is useful for printing a design reference, adding a preview to a product catalog, or editing the appearance in an image editor. Its main limitation is that it represents only the rendered preview: stitch paths, needle penetrations, thread stops, and machine settings are not retained. BMP files can also be much larger than PNG or JPEG images at the same dimensions.

How to convert PEC to BMP

Menu names and bitmap-export capabilities differ between embroidery programs. If the application can open PEC but has no image export function, capture or export its design preview at the required resolution rather than renaming the file extension.

Quality and compatibility limits

The output resolution is determined by the export dimensions, not by the number of stitches in the PEC file. Exporting a small preview and enlarging it later produces pixelation; set the intended print or display dimensions before conversion.

Thread colors may change because PEC color information is commonly mapped to a software palette, while BMP stores displayed RGB colors. The result can therefore differ from the actual thread colors, especially with metallic, fluorescent, or brand-specific threads.

Keep the original PEC file for production. A BMP cannot be converted back into an accurate stitch design because it contains no reliable information about stitch order, density, underlay, trims, jumps, or thread changes.
