What the XXX format is

In machine embroidery, XXX is the Compucon/Singer embroidery design format. An XXX file stores digitized stitch data, including stitch coordinates, jumps, trims, color-change information, and thread-color assignments. Compucon embroidery software and some Singer-compatible design systems create it, and it commonly appears when designs are downloaded from older embroidery workflows or exported for compatible machines.

XXX is a machine-readable format rather than a normal picture format. Its data describes how the needle moves, so an image viewer cannot display it correctly without interpreting the embroidery commands.

What the BMP format is

BMP is a raster image format that records colored pixels. It is supported by Windows graphics software, many print utilities, and basic image editors, making it suitable for design previews, documentation, pattern sheets, and compatibility with older applications.

BMP normally uses little or no compression, so it preserves the rendered pixels without JPEG-style artifacts. The trade-off is a larger file than PNG or JPEG. A BMP cannot contain the original stitch sequence, thread-change commands, or machine settings.

How to convert XXX to BMP

3. Select BMP as the output format.

For offline work, open the XXX in compatible embroidery software such as Wilcom EmbroideryStudio or Hatch Embroidery, inspect the stitch simulation, and use its preview or image-export function to save a BMP. Quality and compatibility limits

The converter renders stitch paths into pixels. It does not recover the original artwork, create smooth vector outlines, or preserve editable thread objects. Small lettering and dense fills may look different from the physical embroidery because the BMP shows a flat simulation rather than thread thickness, fabric texture, and stitch sheen.

Check the rendered image for missing colors, incorrect thread sequencing, clipped edges, and an unsuitable background before using it for documentation. BMP dimensions determine visual detail: enlarging a low-resolution result later will not restore stitch-level information. If the destination is an embroidery machine, keep the original XXX or convert it to the machine's required stitch format instead of using the BMP.
