Free online DSB to BMP converter

DSB files contain machine embroidery stitch instructions, but many image viewers and office tools cannot open them. Converting a DSB design to BMP creates a bitmap preview for sharing, printing, cataloging, or basic image editing; it does not create another editable embroidery file.

What the DSB format is

DSB is a Barudan machine embroidery format containing encoded stitch coordinates, color-change information, and machine movement commands. Embroidery digitizing and production software uses it to send designs to compatible Barudan machines and other systems that support the format.

You usually encounter DSB files after exporting a digitized design for machine production, receiving a design from an embroidery supplier, or transferring files between embroidery software and a machine. DSB is a stitch format rather than a general-purpose graphic format, so ordinary image applications normally cannot display it directly.

What the BMP format is

BMP is a raster image format that stores pixels, commonly in RGB or indexed color. Windows software, image editors, document applications, and cataloging systems support BMP without requiring embroidery-specific software.

BMP is useful when the required result is a visible design preview rather than machine-readable stitch data. It is straightforward to print and edit, but it normally produces larger files than PNG or JPEG because BMP commonly uses little or no compression.

How to actually convert DSB to BMP

Convert from embroidery software

Open the DSB file in embroidery software that supports Barudan designs, such as an appropriate version of Embird or Wilcom EmbroideryStudio. Check the design preview for hoop placement, thread colors, and missing or incorrectly interpreted stitches, then use the program's image export command, commonly File → Export or File → Save As, and select BMP if the application provides that format.

If the program offers export settings, set the intended image dimensions or resolution, choose a white or transparent background as needed, and export the visible design preview rather than a machine format.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

• A BMP contains only rendered pixels. It does not retain stitch editing, stitch order, thread trims, needle assignments, hoop limits, or machine commands.
• The preview may show thread colors approximately; DSB color information and the software's thread chart do not guarantee an exact physical thread color.
• Choose sufficient output dimensions before conversion. Enlarging a small BMP later can produce jagged edges, while increasing image size during rendering preserves a cleaner preview.
• Do not use BMP as a replacement production file. Keep the original DSB and, preferably, the editable digitizing project for future resizing or stitch changes.
• Some DSB files depend on format-specific interpretation of jumps, trims, color changes, or stitch limits. If the preview looks incomplete, use embroidery software that explicitly supports Barudan DSB rather than treating the file as a generic image.
