What the PCS format is

PCS is a Pfaff embroidery design format used by older Pfaff embroidery machines and embroidery applications. A PCS file stores stitch coordinates, stitch types or movement commands, color-change information, and design dimensions rather than a conventional pixel image.

You may encounter PCS files in collections of older Pfaff designs, embroidery digitizing software, machine-transfer workflows, and archived design libraries. The exact supported PCS revision depends on the application; some programs read only particular Pfaff PCS versions.

What the BMP format is

BMP is a bitmap image format supported by Windows software, image editors, document tools, and cataloging systems. It stores the visible result as pixels, commonly at 24-bit color, without requiring embroidery-specific software.

BMP is useful for design thumbnails, printed worksheets, inventory records, and importing a visual reference into graphics software. It is generally less space-efficient than PNG or JPEG, but it preserves a straightforward, widely supported raster representation and can be saved without lossy compression.

How to convert PCS to BMP

Using the online converter

2. Choose .pcs as the input and upload the embroidery design.
3. Select BMP as the output format and start the conversion.
4. Download the generated bitmap and open it in an image viewer to check the design orientation, colors, and margins.

Using embroidery software

1. Open the PCS file in embroidery software with Pfaff PCS support, such as Embird, Wilcom EmbroideryStudio, or PREMIER+ 2.

Menu names differ between products and editions. If the application offers only a print command, print the stitch simulation to a bitmap through its available image-export or virtual-printer workflow rather than saving the PCS file with a different extension.

Quality and compatibility limitations

A PCS-to-BMP conversion discards stitch commands, thread sequencing, trims, machine settings, and editability. Keep the original PCS file for production; the BMP cannot be loaded into an embroidery machine as a stitch design.

The bitmap’s quality depends on the export dimensions and preview renderer. Export at the final display or print size, or at a higher resolution when the image will be reduced later. Increasing BMP resolution does not add stitch detail that was absent from the PCS preview.

Thread colors may change if the PCS file has incomplete color metadata or the converter uses a different thread palette. A bitmap also cannot reliably show subtle information such as underlay, stitch density, pull compensation, or exact needle penetrations; use an embroidery simulator for production checks.
