What the U01 format is

U01 is a Barudan machine-embroidery stitch format. It stores the needle movements, stitch coordinates, color changes, and related machine instructions required to sew a design. U01 files are created by Barudan equipment and embroidery digitizing software that supports Barudan output, and commonly appear when a design is transferred to or exported for a Barudan machine.

U01 is a stitch-only or machine-oriented format rather than a fully editable design document. It may not retain the original artwork, embroidery objects, lettering, outlines, or digitizing settings. The exact thread-color information shown by conversion software can also depend on the file and the program's thread chart.

What the BMP format is

BMP is a raster image format that stores pixels rather than stitches. It is useful for showing an embroidery preview in ordinary image viewers, inserting the design into documents, printing a reference sheet, or editing the preview in a graphics program.

BMP is widely supported and does not normally apply JPEG-style compression, so preview edges remain free of compression artifacts. The trade-off is a relatively large file, especially at high resolution. A BMP exported from U01 contains no sewable data, stitch sequence, thread changes, or machine settings.

How to convert U01 to BMP

Using the online converter

1. Open the U01-to-BMP converter on 101convert.com.
2. Select or drop the file with the .u01 extension.
3. Choose BMP as the output format and start the conversion.
4. Download the resulting bitmap and check that the complete design, thread colors, and lettering are visible.

This method is suitable for obtaining a quick preview without installing embroidery software. It does not recover editable embroidery objects because the U01 file does not generally contain them.

Using embroidery software

1. Open the U01 file in an embroidery editor that supports Barudan U01, such as a compatible version of Hatch Embroidery, Wilcom EmbroideryStudio, or Embird.
2. Verify the hoop, design size, stitch orientation, color sequence, and thread chart in the design preview or stitch simulator.
3. Use File → Export, Save As, or the program's equivalent bitmap-preview command, then select BMP.
4. Set the output dimensions or resolution. Use a larger pixel size when the BMP will be printed or enlarged, and a smaller size for email or web documentation.
5. Open the exported .bmp file in an image viewer to confirm that the whole hoop area or design area was rendered as intended.

Menu names differ between software versions. If the program offers both a design bitmap and a screenshot, use the design-bitmap export because it normally renders the stitch simulation at a defined resolution and includes more accurate thread colors.

Quality and compatibility limitations

The conversion rasterizes the U01 stitch data. It does not preserve editable lettering, stitch types, underlay, density controls, trims, or color-change commands in the BMP. Keep the original U01 file for production and use the BMP only as a visual reference.

Before exporting, set the intended design scale and hoop orientation. Enlarging a low-resolution BMP later produces blurred edges, while reducing it can hide narrow satin columns and small lettering. A resolution around 150–300 dpi is generally adequate for printed documentation; screen previews need fewer pixels.

U01 files may contain machine-specific settings or incomplete thread-color names. A BMP converter can display approximate colors, but it cannot guarantee that the preview matches the thread currently installed on the machine. For accurate color documentation, assign the correct thread chart in the embroidery software before exporting.

BMP does not provide transparency consistently across viewers and commonly produces larger files than PNG or JPEG. If another application accepts only BMP, use BMP; otherwise, export a PNG copy for sharing while retaining the U01 source.
