Free online U01 to DXF converter

A Barudan embroidery design may need conversion when its U01 stitch file must be opened in CAD software or supplied as vector geometry for editing. DXF is not an embroidery-machine format, so the conversion is mainly useful for extracting a drawing from an existing stitch design.

What the U01 format is

U01 is a Barudan machine-embroidery format that stores stitch instructions, including needle movement, jump stitches, trims, color changes, and machine control information. You encounter it in designs prepared for Barudan embroidery machines or exported by embroidery digitizing software with Barudan format support.

Because U01 stores the final stitch plan rather than editable artwork, it does not normally contain the original vector outlines, fills, lettering objects, or digitizing settings. Software that opens it may display the design as stitches and allow limited editing, but it cannot always recover the source artwork accurately.

What the DXF format is

DXF is the Drawing Exchange Format used to exchange CAD geometry between applications such as AutoCAD, DraftSight, LibreCAD, and other technical drawing systems. A DXF file can contain lines, arcs, polylines, circles, and other vector entities that are suitable for scaling, measurement, drafting, laser preparation, or further CAD editing.

DXF is useful here when a stitch design must be inspected as outlines or transferred into CAD. It is not suitable for sending the converted file back to a Barudan machine without re-digitizing it into an embroidery format.

How to actually convert U01 to DXF

For a quick conversion, use the converter on 101convert.com; it can be used free without installing software.

1. Open the U01-to-DXF conversion page on 101convert.com.
2. Select the .u01 Barudan embroidery file. Do not upload a file merely because it has a similar extension; the source must be an embroidery U01 file.
3. Start the conversion and wait for the file-processing step to finish.
4. Download the resulting .dxf file and open it in a CAD application such as LibreCAD, DraftSight, or AutoCAD.
5. Check the drawing units, scale, stitch direction, color-separated sections, and duplicated or fragmented geometry before using it for production.

For local processing, first open the U01 file in embroidery software that supports Barudan import, such as Wilcom EmbroideryStudio, Hatch Embroidery, or Embird. Use File → Import or File → Open, then export through File → Export if the program provides a DXF output option. If direct DXF export is unavailable, export or save the design as an intermediate vector format supported by the program, open that file in a vector editor, and save it as DXF.

When the software exposes a choice between stitch paths and design outlines, choose outlines for CAD work. If it offers a setting for duplicate stitches or jump stitches, exclude those machine movements unless the purpose is to document the actual needle path.

Quality and compatibility limitations

The conversion is inherently approximate because U01 contains stitches while DXF contains geometric drawing entities. A converter may trace stitch rows into many short line segments rather than recreate the original artwork; satin columns, fills, underlay, trims, and overlapping objects can therefore produce cluttered or oversized geometry.

Inspect the DXF at its intended scale. Stitch-based tracing can contain thousands of small entities, disconnected sections, duplicate contours, and visible gaps caused by jumps or trims. CAD software may also interpret the file in millimeters, inches, or drawing units differently from the embroidery software.

If accurate editable artwork is required, obtain the original vector or digitized design instead of converting U01. If the objective is to run the design on an embroidery machine, retain the U01 file or re-digitize the DXF into the machine format required by the target machine; DXF alone does not preserve thread sequencing, needle commands, density, underlay, or color-change instructions.
