A CAD, drafting, or digitizing program may require .dxf when it cannot open a machine-embroidery .sew file. Converting it changes stitch instructions into drawing geometry for editing, measurement, tracing, or technical archiving.

What the SEW format is

SEW is a machine-embroidery design format associated primarily with Janome embroidery machines and software, and with compatible Elna workflows. A SEW file stores stitch coordinates, movement and trim information, color-change data, and other instructions needed to reproduce a design on supported embroidery equipment.

SEW is a production format rather than a general-purpose vector format. Embroidery editors such as compatible Janome software and Embird may open it, but supported hoop sizes, stitch limits, thread colors, and editing features vary by application and machine generation.

What the DXF format is

DXF is Autodesk's Drawing Exchange Format for transferring drawing data between CAD, drafting, vector-editing, and some digitizing applications. A DXF file can contain lines, polylines, arcs, circles, layers, and other geometric objects, with units such as millimeters or inches.

DXF geometry can be measured, scaled, edited, combined with technical drawings, or used as reference artwork for redigitizing. It is not an embroidery-machine format; a machine cannot normally stitch a DXF directly. After editing, the geometry must be digitized and exported to a format supported by the target machine, such as JEF, PES, DST, or another compatible format.

How to convert SEW to DXF

2. Upload the file with the .sew extension and choose DXF as the output format.
3. Start the conversion and download the resulting .dxf file when processing finishes.

4. Open the exported file in CAD software, set the correct drawing units, and compare its physical dimensions with the original design.

Do not assume that Ink/Stitch or an embroidery editor supports direct SEW import and DXF export in every installation. Confirm both functions in the specific version before relying on it; Inkscape's DXF capabilities and an extension's embroidery-format support are separate features.

Quality and compatibility limitations

SEW contains stitch-level instructions, while DXF contains geometric objects. Conversion may turn stitch runs into many line segments or polylines, create outlines from selected regions, and separate objects by thread color. It cannot reliably preserve underlay, stitch density, pull compensation, satin-column behavior, trims, needle settings, or machine-specific color-change commands.

Dense designs can produce DXF files containing thousands of short segments. These files may be slow to edit and may look unlike clean vector artwork. For an editable outline, simplify the converted paths or redraw them in CAD or digitizing software instead of treating every stitch as a finished contour.

Check the DXF at the intended physical size and confirm whether the receiving application interprets units as millimeters or inches. If the design will return to machine production, use the DXF as reference artwork, redigitize it for the target hoop and fabric, export the appropriate machine format, and test-stitch the result.
