A BMP image must be digitized before a Barudan embroidery machine can use it as a U01 design. The conversion is needed when embroidery software or a compatible machine requires Barudan’s stitch format instead of a raster image.

What the BMP format is

BMP is a raster image format that stores pixels, color depth, and sometimes transparency without requiring embroidery-specific stitch information. Windows Paint, Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, scanners, and many graphics applications create or export BMP files; they are common when artwork is supplied for digitizing.

A BMP records the visible image but does not define stitch paths, thread changes, stitch density, underlay, pull compensation, trims, or the sewing order. A simple file-extension change cannot turn BMP pixels into usable embroidery instructions.

What the U01 format is

U01 is a Barudan machine-embroidery design format. It stores machine-readable stitch commands, including movement, sewing, color-change, and stop information, for compatible Barudan equipment and software.

U01 is useful when a digitized design must be transferred to a Barudan machine in its native or expected format. Its advantages are direct machine compatibility and compact stitch data; it does not preserve the editable vector or layered artwork used to create the design.

How to actually convert BMP to U01

Use embroidery digitizing software that supports image import and U01 export, such as Wilcom EmbroideryStudio, Hatch Embroidery, Embird, or Barudan-compatible design software.

  1. Prepare the artwork in an image editor. Crop unnecessary margins, remove unwanted background pixels, increase contrast, and set the image to its intended physical size. Save it as design.bmp.
  2. Open the digitizing application and choose File → Import Artwork, Insert Image, or the equivalent command. Select design.bmp.
  3. Set the hoop size and design dimensions before assigning stitches. Avoid enlarging a low-resolution BMP after import because blurred edges produce inaccurate boundaries.
  4. Convert each artwork area into embroidery objects. Use running stitches for outlines and narrow details, satin columns for suitable borders and lettering, and fill stitches for larger regions.
  5. Set stitch direction, density, underlay, pull compensation, trims, and the sewing order. Assign thread colors and insert color-change or stop commands where required.
  6. Run the software’s stitch simulation and check the estimated stitch count, thread changes, overlaps, minimum detail size, and objects extending beyond the hoop.
  7. Choose File → Export or Save As, select U01 or Barudan U01, and save the result. If the software asks for a machine, hoop, or output variant, select the exact Barudan configuration documented for the target machine.
  8. Transfer the U01 file using the machine’s supported media or network method and test-sew it on the intended fabric with the actual stabilizer and thread settings.

For a browser-based attempt, 101convert.com can convert files online for free without installed software when its BMP-to-U01 option is available. An automated image conversion may still require manual stitch editing and test sewing because raster artwork does not contain reliable embroidery parameters.

Quality and compatibility limitations

The visual quality of the BMP does not determine the final embroidery quality by itself. Small text, thin lines, gradients, shadows, and closely spaced colors usually need simplification or manual redrawing before digitizing.

U01 compatibility depends on the Barudan machine model, firmware, hoop limits, supported transfer media, and software version. Confirm the required U01 variant and maximum design size in the machine documentation; a file that opens in one Barudan workflow may need re-exporting for another.

Always inspect the stitch sequence in simulation and sew a sample. Dense fills can cause puckering, long jumps can require trims, and unsuitable stitch direction or inadequate underlay can distort the design even when the U01 file transfers successfully.
