A Barudan embroidery machine may require a U01 stitch file instead of the original artwork. Converting an SVG therefore requires digitizing its shapes into stitches, then exporting machine instructions in the U01 format.

What the SVG format is

SVG is a resolution-independent XML graphics format used for logos, lettering, appliqué outlines, and other vector artwork. In machine-embroidery workflows, SVG files commonly come from Inkscape, Adobe Illustrator, CorelDRAW, or design software that exports vector paths.

An SVG describes lines, curves, fills, gradients, and text; it does not specify stitch types, stitch length, underlay, pull compensation, thread sequence, trims, or machine speed. A direct format change cannot preserve those embroidery settings without digitizing the artwork.

What the U01 format is

U01 is a machine-embroidery stitch format associated primarily with Barudan embroidery equipment. It stores the machine movements and commands needed to sew a design, including needle movement, color changes, jumps, and stops, rather than editable vector geometry.

U01 is useful when a Barudan-compatible machine, controller, or production workflow specifically requests that format. Its main advantage is machine-ready stitch data; its limitation is that editing the resulting file is less flexible than editing the source SVG or a native embroidery design.

How to convert SVG to U01

Using the online converter

  1. Prepare the SVG before uploading it. Convert text to paths, remove hidden objects and unsupported effects, and use closed shapes where possible.
  2. Open the SVG-to-U01 converter on 101convert.com.
  3. Upload the .svg file and select U01 as the output format.
  4. Start the conversion and download the resulting .u01 file when processing finishes.
  5. Open the file in Barudan-compatible machine software or an embroidery editor, check the stitch preview, and confirm the hoop size, color order, trims, and sewing direction before production.

This route requires no installed software, but an automated conversion may assign basic fills and outlines without producing production-quality underlay or compensation.

Using desktop digitizing software

  1. Open the SVG in Inkscape and verify that artwork is made from paths. Use Path → Object to Path for text and Path → Simplify only when reducing excessive nodes will not change the shape.
  2. Install Ink/Stitch, or open the artwork in dedicated embroidery software such as Wilcom, Hatch Embroidery, or Embird.
  3. Assign each object an embroidery method: satin stitch for narrow columns, fill stitch for larger areas, and running stitch for outlines or fine details.
  4. Set stitch density, stitch length, underlay, pull compensation, entry and exit points, trims, and thread color order. Define the hoop and resize the design before generating stitches.
  5. Preview the simulated sewing sequence, correct long jumps or excessive density, then choose the Barudan U01 export option, commonly under File → Export or Save As.
  6. Transfer the exported .u01 file using the machine’s supported media or network method and test it on fabric with the intended stabilizer and thread.

Quality and compatibility limitations

The SVG’s visual dimensions do not guarantee a suitable embroidery result. Very small lettering, sharp corners, thin strokes, gradients, transparency, and dense overlapping fills usually require manual redesign. Keep stitch density appropriate for the fabric to avoid thread buildup, puckering, or needle breaks.

Check that the target machine or controller supports the exact U01 variant produced by the software. Some workflows require a specific hoop, color-change convention, trim behavior, or machine-generation setting. Preserve the original SVG and, when available, the editable embroidery project because U01 generally cannot restore the original vector shapes or digitizing decisions.
