Free online EMF to U01 converter

EMF embroidery designs must be converted when a Barudan-compatible machine or production system accepts U01 but cannot read the source file. The conversion changes the design into stitch commands rather than merely renaming the extension.

What the EMF format is

In machine embroidery, EMF is a vendor-specific embroidery design format containing stitch coordinates, color-change information, and sometimes trim or jump instructions. It is unrelated to the Windows Enhanced Metafile format with the same extension.

EMF files are created or exported by some embroidery digitizing and machine-design applications. You may encounter them in design archives supplied for older or proprietary embroidery systems. Support varies by software because EMF is not as widely standardized as DST, PES, or JEF.

What the U01 format is

U01 is a Barudan machine embroidery format. It stores the stitch sequence and machine control data needed by compatible Barudan equipment or production software, including movement coordinates, needle changes, and supported stop or trim commands.

U01 is useful when a Barudan workflow requires its native design format. It is not a general-purpose editable design format: after conversion, the result is primarily a machine-ready stitch file, so original outlines, fills, lettering objects, and digitizing settings may no longer be independently editable.

How to actually convert EMF to U01

1. Make a copy of the original .emf file and confirm that it is an embroidery EMF file, not a Windows graphic.
2. Open the file in embroidery software that supports both EMF import and U01 export. Wilcom EmbroideryStudio, Pulse software, or another professional digitizing package may provide these formats, depending on the installed version and licensed machine-format modules.
3. Check the design on screen and select the intended hoop, fabric, thread sequence, and machine orientation. If the software asks for a Barudan machine profile, choose the profile matching the destination machine.
4. Use File → Export, Save As, or the software’s machine-format command, select U01, and save the result with a new filename such as design.u01.
5. Reopen the exported U01 in the same program or inspect it with the Barudan production software. Verify stitch count, color order, hoop limits, trims, and the first and last needle positions before sending it to the machine.

Quality and compatibility limitations

U01 compatibility can depend on Barudan model, controller generation, hoop configuration, and software settings. Inspect the stitch simulation and, where possible, test-sew on the intended fabric. Do not exceed the machine’s stitch-count, color-change, coordinate, or hoop-size limits; split or resize the design in digitizing software when necessary rather than relying on a simple file-extension change.
