A Barudan embroidery machine may require a design in U01 format when the source design is supplied as a TIF embroidery file. Converting the stitch data lets you inspect the design in machine software and transfer it in a format the target machine can read.
What the TIF format is
In machine embroidery, TIF can denote a Tajima embroidery design file containing stitch data, color changes, and machine movement commands. Tajima DG/ML and other digitizing systems that support Tajima export can create this format, and it commonly appears when designs are exchanged from Tajima-based workflows.
This meaning is different from a TIFF image used for photographs or scanned artwork. A TIF file that opens only as a bitmap does not contain stitches and cannot be converted directly into U01 without first digitizing the artwork.
What the U01 format is
U01 is a Barudan machine-embroidery format. It stores the stitch sequence and machine control information needed by compatible Barudan equipment, including jumps, trims or stops where supported, color changes, and design positioning.
U01 is useful when Barudan production software or a Barudan machine does not accept the original TIF file. Its main advantage is compatibility with that machine family, not improved artwork quality; it remains a stitch-based format rather than an editable vector design.
How to actually convert TIF to U01
Using the online converter
- Make a backup of the original
.tiffile. - Open the TIF-to-U01 converter on 101convert.com.
- Upload the embroidery TIF file and select
U01as the output format. - Start the conversion and download the resulting
.u01file. - Open the output in Barudan software or an embroidery design viewer. Check the hoop size, dimensions, stitch count, color sequence, trims, and jump stitches before transferring it to the machine.
The online method requires no installed software, but it can only translate an embroidery TIF that already contains stitch data. A photographic or scanned TIF must be digitized first.
Using desktop embroidery software
- Open the file in embroidery software that explicitly supports both TIF import and U01 export. Wilcom EmbroideryStudio and Embird may support these formats depending on the edition and installed format modules.
- Import the design through the program's embroidery-design import command rather than opening it as a generic image.
- Verify the design's hoop, scale, stitch density, underlay, thread sequence, and machine stops. Avoid changing the scale unless the software recalculates stitch spacing.
- Export or save the design as
.u01, then reopen the exported file to confirm that it remains within the target hoop and retains the intended stitch order. - Transfer the file using the Barudan machine's supported storage or network method and sew a test sample before production.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
This conversion does not increase resolution: the source stitch coordinates remain the basis of the output. A converter may remap thread colors, discard brand-specific color names, reinterpret trim commands, or replace unsupported machine instructions with jumps or stops.
U01 compatibility depends on the Barudan model, controller, hoop configuration, and software version. Confirm the maximum design area and supported U01 variant in the machine documentation. Do not merely rename the extension; the file's internal stitch encoding must be converted.
If the converted design shows unexpected jumps, missing trims, incorrect colors, or a changed stitch count, re-export it with a Barudan-specific machine profile in desktop embroidery software and test-sew it before production.
