What the PNG format is

PNG is a raster image format that stores pixels with lossless compression and can preserve transparency. Drawing applications, scanners, design software, and web browsers commonly create or display PNG files. In machine embroidery, a PNG is usually a logo, drawing, or scanned reference image used as the source for digitizing.

What the U01 format is

U01 is a Barudan machine-embroidery design format. It stores embroidery instructions such as needle positions, stitch movement, color changes, and related machine-control data rather than the original image pixels. U01 is useful when a Barudan machine or Barudan-compatible embroidery system specifically requires that format.

A U01 file can produce an actual stitch-out, but it does not retain the editable properties of the PNG. The exported design depends on digitizer settings including stitch type, density, underlay, thread sequence, trims, hoop size, and pull compensation.

How to actually convert PNG to U01

Using the online converter

1. Prepare a clean PNG with the artwork cropped to its intended proportions. Remove unnecessary background areas and use a sufficiently large source image so edges are identifiable.

3. Upload the PNG and select U01 as the output format.
4. Set the design dimensions, embroidery area or hoop size, thread colors, and any available stitch or density options. Image conversion may require automatic digitizing, so inspect every generated object if the service provides a preview or editing stage.

6. Open the file in compatible embroidery software, simulate the stitch sequence, and transfer it to the machine using the machine’s supported media or connection method.

Using embroidery digitizing software

For logos, lettering, or production work, use embroidery software such as Wilcom, Hatch Embroidery, or Embird. Import the image through a path such as File → Import Artwork, trace or auto-digitize each shape, then assign fill, satin, or running stitches. Set the hoop and final size before generating stitches, arrange color changes, and export through a path such as File → Export Design with U01 or Barudan U01 selected.

Automatic tracing is only a starting point. Edit object boundaries, stitch direction, small details, overlaps, entry and exit points, and thread trims before saving the U01 file.

Quality and compatibility limits

A PNG has no information about fabric, stitch direction, thread behavior, or acceptable stitch density. A low-resolution or anti-aliased image can therefore create jagged outlines, excessive stitches, weak detail, or unwanted thread changes. Small text and thin lines often need redesign rather than direct conversion.

Check that the target machine supports the exported U01 variant and that the hoop dimensions match the design. Preview the stitch count and color order, then test-sew on the intended fabric with the actual stabilizer and thread; a file that looks correct on screen can still require density, underlay, or compensation changes.
