What the EPS format is

In machine embroidery, EPS is used by some embroidery applications as a design-file format; it should not automatically be treated as a generic PostScript illustration. Depending on the originating program, an EPS file may contain stitch data, thread information, color changes, and design metadata, or it may contain outlines that still require digitizing.

You can encounter embroidery EPS files when designs are exchanged between digitizing systems, supplied by a designer, or exported from older commercial embroidery software. The extension is not a universal embroidery standard, so the program that created the file can affect whether another application imports it correctly.

What the U01 format is

U01 is a Barudan machine-embroidery format used to send stitch instructions to compatible Barudan machines and controllers. A U01 file normally contains ordered needle movements, thread stops or color changes, and machine-oriented design information rather than editable vector artwork.

U01 is useful when production equipment specifically accepts Barudan U01 files. Its advantage is direct compatibility with that machine family; its limitation is that it is not a general-purpose design format and may not preserve every editing feature from the source file.

How to actually convert EPS to U01

Using the online converter

1. Open the EPS-to-U01 converter on 101convert.com; it can be used free without installing software.
2. Upload the embroidery file with the .eps extension.
3. Choose U01 as the output format and start the conversion.
4. Download the resulting .u01 file and copy it to the transfer media or workflow required by the Barudan controller.
5. Open the file in compatible embroidery software or the machine’s design browser before stitching.

Using embroidery software

Use an embroidery application that supports both the source EPS variant and Barudan U01 export, such as a compatible version of Embird or Wilcom EmbroideryStudio. Import the file through File → Open or File → Import, confirm the design’s stitch objects and thread sequence, then choose File → Save as or File → Export and select U01.

Before saving, set the target hoop, machine orientation, thread-change behavior, trimming rules, and maximum stitch length. If the EPS contains only artwork outlines, first use the software’s digitizing tools to create stitch objects; changing the filename or exporting directly cannot turn unstitched artwork into a usable embroidery design.

Quality and compatibility limits

Inspect the converted design in stitch-view mode. Check total stitch count, thread colors, jump stitches, trims, start and end points, appliqué stops, and any stitches exceeding the machine’s limits.

U01 compatibility can vary with Barudan machine generation, controller, hoop configuration, and transfer method. Test the file with the exact machine and a fabric sample before production. Keep the original EPS because U01 is a production format and usually offers less editing flexibility than the source design.
