Free online SVG to PES converter

Brother and Baby Lock embroidery machines generally require a .pes stitch file, while logos and illustrations often begin as SVG artwork. Conversion is needed to turn that artwork into ordered stitches for machine transfer, editing, or sharing.

What the SVG format is

SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) is an XML-based format that stores paths, shapes, text, fills, strokes, and other drawing instructions rather than fixed pixels. Designers use it for logos, icons, illustrations, print artwork, cutting files, and web graphics in applications such as Inkscape, Adobe Illustrator, CorelDRAW, and Affinity Designer.

SVG artwork can be resized without rasterization, but it contains no embroidery instructions. It does not define stitch types, stitch order, density, direction, underlay, trims, thread changes, or fabric compensation. An SVG can also contain gradients, filters, clipping masks, transparency, or embedded raster images that must be simplified before digitizing.

What the PES format is

PES is a machine-embroidery format associated primarily with Brother and Baby Lock equipment. It stores stitch coordinates, color blocks, thread-change commands, and design metadata required by compatible embroidery software and machines.

PES is suitable for opening in software such as Brother PE-Design, Hatch Embroidery, Wilcom EmbroideryStudio, and Embrilliance, then transferring to a compatible machine. Unlike SVG, it is not resolution-independent artwork: enlarging a PES file does not create the additional stitches needed for coverage, detail, or correct density.

Convert with Inkscape and Ink/Stitch

1. Install a current Inkscape version supported by the current Ink/Stitch release, then install Ink/Stitch from the official Ink/Stitch project.
2. Open design.svg in Inkscape. Convert lettering to outlines with Path → Object to Path, remove unnecessary effects, and simplify shapes into clean closed areas and usable lines. Resolve or remove gradients, masks, transparency, and embedded images that cannot be digitized as vector objects.
3. Set the design's real dimensions and target hoop. Keep the artwork within the machine's actual sewing field, which is smaller than the outside dimensions of many hoops.
4. Open each object's embroidery parameters through Extensions → Ink/Stitch → Params. Assign fill stitches to broad areas, satin columns to suitable borders and lettering, and running stitches to outlines or fine details.
5. Set stitch direction, density, underlay, pull compensation, minimum stitch length, trims, and thread colors. These settings depend on fabric, stabilizer, thread, needle, and design size; they cannot be reliably inferred from SVG geometry alone.
6. Run the Ink/Stitch preview and simulator. Inspect stitch order, jumps, trims, thread changes, overlaps, gaps, unnecessary travel stitches, and total stitch count. Correct the objects or parameters before exporting.
7. Use Extensions → Ink/Stitch → Embroider, choose PES when prompted, and save the result as design.pes. Reopen the file in an embroidery editor or compatible viewer to verify the exported stitch plan.

Commercial desktop options

Hatch Embroidery, Wilcom EmbroideryStudio, Brother PE-Design, and SewArt can import supported vector artwork or use it as a basis for manual digitizing and export to PES. SVG import and PES-version support vary by product edition, so convert the artwork to clean paths or use the vector format documented by the application when direct SVG import is unavailable.

These applications are preferable for lettering, satin columns, appliqué, small details, and fabric-specific work because they allow stitch editing, sequencing, simulation, and compensation adjustments. A generic one-click exporter usually assigns basic stitches without producing a production-ready design.

Online conversion limitations

There is no purely structural SVG-to-PES conversion. The process is embroidery digitization: vector areas must be interpreted as stitch objects and assigned machine instructions. Generic online file converters may change the filename or create a nominal PES file without generating usable stitches, so they are not suitable substitutes for digitizing software.

For an online workflow, use a specialist embroidery digitizing service that explicitly provides PES output, confirms the target machine and hoop, supplies a stitch preview or proof, and accepts revision requests. Upload only designs that are permitted for cloud processing; confidential logos and customer artwork should remain in local software.

Quality and compatibility checks

Convert text to paths or embed the exact font before digitizing, because a missing font can change the lettering. Thin strokes, narrow gaps, and small holes may disappear at the final size or fall below the practical minimum stitch length.

Large fills need appropriate underlay, stitch direction, density, and pull compensation to reduce gaps, distortion, and fabric show-through. The same SVG can produce different PES files in different applications, and every result may need manual correction.

Check the machine's maximum hoop and sewing field, supported PES revision, stitch-count limit, color-change limit, thread requirements, and supported commands. If the software provides a PES version selector, use the version documented for the target machine.

Keep the original design.svg and the editable embroidery project alongside design.pes. Edit the project rather than enlarging the exported PES, then stitch a test sample on comparable fabric with the intended stabilizer before producing the final item.
