What the DSB format is

In machine embroidery, DSB is a Barudan embroidery design format containing stitch coordinates, color-change information, and machine commands. Embroidery digitizing and editing programs can create or export DSB files for compatible Barudan machines. You may encounter DSB files when receiving a design from an embroidery service, opening an older machine file, or preparing production data for a Barudan controller.

DSB is not a conventional picture format: it does not store a photographic or illustrated bitmap. Its visual appearance must be rendered from the stitch data by embroidery software.

What the TIFF format is

TIFF stores raster pixels and is commonly used for high-resolution artwork, printed documentation, archival images, and graphics workflows that require lossless quality. TIFF supports RGB, grayscale, and sometimes indexed color, along with options such as LZW or ZIP lossless compression.

A TIFF made from a DSB file is a visual representation of the embroidery design. It cannot be loaded into an embroidery machine as a substitute for the original stitch file and does not retain stitch order, needle commands, thread changes, or digitizing structure.

How to actually convert DSB to TIFF

Using the online converter

Quality and compatibility limitations

The TIFF resolution does not add detail that is absent from the DSB design; it only determines how finely the stitch rendering is sampled. Dense stitching, very small lettering, and overlapping objects may look different from the sewn result because a flat image cannot reproduce fabric texture, thread sheen, puckering, or underlay.

Keep the original DSB file alongside the TIFF. The TIFF is suitable for approval sheets, catalogs, and print output, but editing it in a graphics program will not edit the underlying stitches. If the design must remain machine-editable, preserve the DSB and, preferably, an editable source format from the digitizing application.
