What the XXX format is

.xxx is the Singer embroidery design format. It stores stitch coordinates, color information, and other commands used to reproduce a design on compatible Singer embroidery systems. Singer embroidery software and some third-party digitizing applications can create or export XXX files.

An XXX file is a stitch file rather than a conventional picture. It may contain thread paths and color changes without storing a complete photographic preview, so an embroidery-aware application must interpret it before it can be rendered as TIFF.

What the TIFF format is

TIFF is a raster image format used for print production, technical documentation, previews, and long-term image storage. It supports high color depth, large dimensions, and lossless compression such as LZW or ZIP.

TIFF is appropriate when the recipient needs to see the design rather than load it into an embroidery machine. It can preserve a cleaner preview than a low-quality JPEG, but it cannot retain editable stitch paths, thread commands, machine settings, or color-change instructions.

How to convert XXX to TIFF

Different software may interpret XXX thread palettes, trims, overlaps, and underlay differently. Check the rendered TIFF against the original design, especially around dense fills and small lettering.

Keep the original XXX file for machine use and future editing. A TIFF cannot be converted back into the original stitch sequence with reliable recovery of trims, underlay, thread changes, or machine-specific settings.
