PEC files are designed for embroidery machines, while TIFF files are raster images used for viewing, editing, printing, and archiving. Convert a PEC design to TIFF when you need a static preview for a catalog, approval document, artwork file, or image-based archive rather than a stitch file for production.

What the PEC format is

PEC is a machine-embroidery design format associated primarily with Brother embroidery machines and software such as Brother PE-Design. Programs including Embird, Hatch Embroidery, and Wilcom can also open or import PEC files, depending on the version and installed format support.

A PEC file stores embroidery instructions: needle penetration coordinates, stitch types, thread color changes, hoop-related design data, and a thread palette. It may also contain a small preview image. The file is normally used to transfer a design to compatible embroidery equipment, not to store a conventional photograph or illustration.

What the TIFF format is

TIFF, usually saved with the .tif or .tiff extension, is a raster-image format used for high-quality graphics, printing, scanning, and long-term storage. It can preserve lossless image data, multiple color channels, grayscale content, and higher bit depths than common web formats.

A TIFF is useful when the embroidery design must be placed in a layout, reviewed by someone without embroidery software, printed, or archived as a visual reference. It does not retain stitch commands, thread-change information, machine settings, or automatic digitizing data.

How to convert PEC to TIFF

The simplest method is the built-in converter on 101convert.com, which can process the file without installing desktop software:

1. Open the PEC-to-TIFF conversion page on 101convert.com.
2. Select or drag the .pec file into the upload area.
3. Choose TIFF as the output format if the page offers multiple target formats.
4. Start the conversion and download the generated .tif or .tiff file.

The converter renders the stitch information as a bitmap. If the service exposes image options, choose the required canvas size, background color, thread-color rendering, and resolution before starting the conversion.

For a desktop workflow, open the PEC file in compatible embroidery software such as Hatch Embroidery, Embird, Wilcom, or Brother PE-Design, then use the program's image export command, such as File → Export or File → Save As, and select TIFF when available. Some embroidery programs export only PNG, JPEG, or PDF; in that case, export the rendered design to PNG first and convert that image to TIFF in an image editor such as GIMP or Affinity Photo.

Quality and compatibility limitations

PEC does not contain a full-color source image. The converter must redraw the stitches using a selected thread chart, simulated stitch texture, or solid color fills, so the TIFF may differ from the physical embroidery and from previews generated by other software.

Set the output dimensions and resolution for the final use. A small preview embedded in a PEC file cannot produce a sharp large-format TIFF; a higher-resolution render from the stitch data is required for print use. A resolution of 300 dpi is generally suitable for ordinary print layouts, provided the design is rendered at the corresponding pixel dimensions.

The resulting TIFF is a visual representation only. Converting it back to PEC cannot reliably reconstruct the original stitch order, underlay, density, pull compensation, trims, or thread changes. Keep the original PEC file for embroidery production and treat the TIFF as a preview, proof, or archival image.
