PEC files are embroidery stitch programs, while AI files are Adobe Illustrator artwork, so this conversion is usually needed when a stitch design must be edited, printed, or incorporated into a vector layout. The process normally reconstructs visual paths from stitch data rather than recovering the original artwork.

What the PEC format is

PEC is a proprietary Brother embroidery format used by Brother embroidery machines and software such as PE-Design. It stores stitch commands, thread colors, needle movements, jumps, trims, and design metadata for machine embroidery.

You commonly encounter PEC files after downloading a Brother-compatible embroidery design or exporting one from PE-Design, Embird, Wilcom, Hatch, or another embroidery application. A PEC file is not a conventional image or vector drawing: it describes how a machine should sew the design.

What the AI format is

AI is Adobe Illustrator’s native artwork format. It stores editable vector objects such as paths, fills, strokes, text, layers, clipping masks, and sometimes embedded raster images.

AI is suitable for changing shapes and colors, preparing logos or print layouts, and exporting to PDF, SVG, EPS, and raster image formats. It does not natively preserve embroidery-specific information such as stitch order, needle penetrations, thread changes, or machine commands.

How to actually convert PEC to AI

Best method: create an SVG or PDF representation first

1. Open the PEC file in embroidery software that can read Brother designs, such as PE-Design, Embird, Wilcom, Hatch, or an application based on the pyembroidery library.
2. Check the design at its intended size. Enable stitch lines, jumps, trims, and thread colors in the preview if the software provides those options.
3. Export the visible design as SVG when available. If SVG is unavailable, export a high-resolution PDF or EPS. An SVG export is preferable because Illustrator can retain editable paths.
4. Open the exported file in Adobe Illustrator with File → Open. For a PDF, select the relevant page and confirm the import settings.
5. Inspect the result. Ungroup objects, delete unwanted jump or travel lines, simplify excessive paths, and correct thread colors or line weights as required.
6. Save the result with File → Save As and choose Adobe Illustrator (AI).

Verify the generated artwork in Illustrator because automated conversion may produce a flattened image or incomplete paths.

When no vector export is available

Export a stitch-preview image from the embroidery program as a large PNG or TIFF, place it in Illustrator with File → Place, and save the document as AI. This creates an AI file containing raster artwork, not editable vector embroidery geometry.

For editable paths, use Illustrator’s Window → Image Trace on the preview, choose a limited color palette, and select Expand. Image Trace approximates the preview’s appearance; it does not recover the original stitch design.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

• A PEC-to-AI conversion cannot normally restore the original vector artwork because PEC contains machine instructions rather than design contours.
• Each stitch may become a separate path, creating thousands of objects and a large, slow Illustrator document. Simplify paths only after keeping an untouched copy of the imported file.
• Stitch-preview exports can contain travel stitches, underlays, and jump lines that should be removed or placed on separate layers before printing.
• Thread colors in PEC are often palette approximations. Replace them with the required thread references or print colors in Illustrator.
• If the end goal is machine embroidery, keep the PEC file. An AI file is not a substitute for a machine-readable embroidery format and cannot be loaded directly into a PEC-compatible machine.
• Confirm the design’s physical dimensions after import; SVG and PDF workflows can change units or scale if the embroidery software and Illustrator use different measurement settings.
