What the PEC format is

PEC is a binary machine-embroidery format associated with Brother and Baby Lock machines. It stores stitch coordinates, color-change information, thread palette data, and usually a preview image. Brother PE-Design, Palette, Hatch Embroidery, Wilcom EmbroideryStudio, and Embrilliance can create or export PEC files.

You normally encounter .pec files when transferring a design to a Brother-compatible machine or sharing a finished stitch file between embroidery programs.

What the EPS format is

EPS, or Encapsulated PostScript, is a page-description format used for vector artwork and print production. It can contain paths, fills, strokes, text, and embedded raster images, and is supported by applications such as Adobe Illustrator, CorelDRAW, Affinity Designer, and Inkscape.

EPS is useful when a PEC preview must be placed on packaging, instruction sheets, catalogs, signage, or other printable artwork. It is not a machine-embroidery format and cannot store stitch order, needle movement, trims, hoop settings, or machine-specific thread commands.

How to convert PEC to EPS

Quick conversion without installing software

1. Open the PEC conversion page on 101convert.com.
2. Upload the .pec file and select EPS as the output format.
3. Start the conversion and download the resulting .eps file.

This route is suitable for a preview or print graphic. Inspect the result in an EPS-capable application because a converter may create an EPS containing a rasterized image rather than editable vector paths.

Controlled conversion with Inkscape and Ink/Stitch

1. Install Inkscape and the Ink/Stitch extension.
2. Open the PEC file through File → Open or Ink/Stitch's embroidery-file import command. Confirm that the stitch preview has the intended thread colors and design scale.
3. Use the imported stitch rendering as the source for the artwork. For clean, editable vector output, manually trace simplified shapes instead of exporting every stitch as a separate path.
4. Save the artwork as SVG, then export it as EPS through File → Save a Copy or run inkscape design.svg --export-filename=design.eps.
5. Open design.eps in the target graphics program and check page size, colors, line joins, clipping, and transparency before sending it to print.

Quality and format limitations

A PEC file describes needle movements, not the original vector artwork. Converting its stitches directly can produce thousands of short paths, visible overlaps, poor editability, and an EPS that is much larger than a manually redrawn design. Small lettering and satin-stitch details may also look incorrect when treated as ordinary vector outlines.

For a faithful visual copy, export a high-resolution rendered preview or retain the stitch paths. For professional print artwork, recreate the major shapes as vectors and use the PEC only as a tracing reference. Keep the PEC file separately if the design may later be sewn; an EPS conversion cannot be converted back into the original stitch sequence reliably.
