Embroidery software and machine workflows use PEC for stitch data, while GIF is useful for a visual preview that can be shared, catalogued, or placed on a web page. Converting PEC to GIF produces a raster image of the design; it does not create another sewable embroidery file.

What the PEC format is

PEC is a machine-embroidery design format associated primarily with Brother embroidery systems. It stores stitch commands, thread-color information, and design data used to sew a pattern, commonly at the .pec extension.

Brother PE-Design creates and opens PEC files, and embroidery applications such as Embird and Wilcom software can typically import or export the format. You may encounter PEC files in design libraries, when transferring patterns to compatible Brother machines, or when receiving an embroidery design from another user.

What the GIF format is

GIF is a raster image format suited to small previews, catalog thumbnails, simple web graphics, and animated images. It supports indexed color, transparency, and a maximum of 256 colors per frame, which is sufficient for a rendered embroidery preview but not for preserving stitch instructions.

A GIF can show the design, thread colors, and background selected by the converter. It cannot be loaded into an embroidery machine as a sewable pattern and cannot reliably preserve stitch order, needle movement, density, underlay, trims, or other production settings.

How to actually convert PEC to GIF

The simplest option is the free converter on 101convert.com, which runs in a browser without installing software:

1. Open the PEC-to-GIF conversion page on 101convert.com.
2. Upload the file with the .pec extension.
3. Select GIF as the output format and start the conversion.
4. Download the generated .gif file and check that the full design and thread colors are visible.

For local processing, open the PEC in embroidery software that supports image export. In Brother PE-Design, Embird, Wilcom, or another compatible editor, use the program's preview or design window, set the desired hoop view, stitch simulation state, background, and thread palette, then choose the available File → Export, Save as image, or equivalent image-export command and select GIF. Menu names vary by program; some embroidery viewers only export PNG or JPEG, in which case export one of those formats and convert it to GIF with an image editor.

Quality and compatibility limitations

The output resolution depends on the converter's preview dimensions rather than the original stitch count. Set a larger canvas before export when the GIF will be printed or displayed at a larger size; enlarging a small GIF afterward creates pixelation.

GIF's indexed palette can alter subtle thread colors, gradients, and anti-aliased edges. PNG is usually a better archival or high-quality preview format, while GIF is appropriate when a specific application requires GIF or when a compact, broadly compatible image is needed.

If the PEC contains multiple color stops or machine-specific information, the GIF shows only the rendered appearance selected by the software. Keep the original PEC for editing and sewing, and verify the design in embroidery software before treating the image as an accurate production reference.
