What the PCM format is

PCM, or Pulse-Code Modulation, stores uncompressed digital audio as numeric samples. Raw PCM files often have no header, so software must be told the sample format, sample rate, channel count, and byte order; common settings include signed 16-bit little-endian audio at 44,100 Hz.

Audio recorders, telephony systems, embedded devices, digital signal-processing tools, and programs such as Audacity or FFmpeg may create PCM data. Files with extensions such as .pcm, .raw, or device-specific names can contain PCM audio. A raw file cannot be interpreted correctly if its recording parameters are unknown.

What the AI format is

Adobe Illustrator’s .ai format stores vector paths, text, fills, effects, and document metadata. It is used for logos, diagrams, illustrations, print artwork, and other graphics that must scale without the pixelation associated with raster images.

AI does not store playable audio. If you need an audio file for editing or archiving, use WAV or AIFF instead of AI; those containers can preserve PCM samples together with format metadata.

How to convert PCM to AI

There is no direct format conversion. To create an Illustrator file representing the audio waveform, use this workflow:

1. Identify the raw PCM parameters. For example, assume signed 16-bit little-endian, 44,100 Hz, stereo.
2. Wrap the raw samples in a WAV container with FFmpeg:

ffmpeg -f s16le -ar 44100 -ac 2 -i input.pcm output.wav

Replace -f, -ar, and -ac with the actual sample format, sample rate, and channel count. Incorrect values produce distorted playback or incorrect timing.

3. Generate a visual waveform from the decoded audio:

4. Open waveform.png in Adobe Illustrator using File → Open.
5. Convert the raster waveform into paths with Window → Image Trace, choose a suitable tracing preset, and select Expand.
6. Remove the embedded raster image if only vector paths are required, then save with File → Save As and choose Adobe Illustrator (.ai).

This creates AI artwork based on the waveform; it does not place the original playable PCM audio inside the Illustrator file. Quality, compatibility, and limitations

The waveform’s accuracy depends first on the raw PCM parameters. A wrong sample rate changes duration and pitch, a wrong channel count misaligns samples, and a wrong sample format can make the signal unusable.

Image Trace produces approximate vector contours and can create many unnecessary anchor points. For clean technical artwork, generate an SVG waveform with a purpose-built audio-visualization tool and open the SVG in Illustrator before saving as AI. SVG generally preserves paths more predictably than tracing a PNG.

If the intended target is an AI audio or machine-learning dataset rather than Adobe Illustrator, .ai is not a standard audio interchange format; retain PCM in WAV or AIFF and convert it to the specific format required by the target application.
