Free online PES to JEF converter

A Brother or Baby Lock .pes design must be converted when the destination Janome or compatible Elna machine accepts .jef instead. The target machine also needs a design that fits one of its supported hoops.

What PES is

PES is a proprietary machine-embroidery format used mainly by Brother and Baby Lock embroidery machines and software. It stores the stitch sequence, color-change stops, design dimensions, and, depending on the PES version, thumbnail previews and other design metadata.

PES is normally produced by Brother PE-Design, Baby Lock software, and embroidery applications such as Embrilliance, Hatch Embroidery, and Wilcom. It is a machine file rather than a fully editable artwork format, so opening it for editing may not restore the original digitizing objects.

What JEF is

JEF is Janome's machine-embroidery format and is also used by many Elna models made on Janome platforms. It contains stitch commands, color stops, design bounds, and header data used to determine compatible hoop sizes.

The practical advantage of JEF is direct compatibility with Janome machines that do not read PES. A valid JEF file can usually be transferred by USB drive, memory card, or the transfer method specified for the machine model.

Convert the design

1. Keep an unchanged copy of the original .pes file.
2. Upload the PES file to the converter on 101convert.com.
3. Select JEF as the output format, run the conversion, and download the .jef file. The conversion is available free without installing software.
4. Open the converted file in embroidery software, if available, and check its dimensions, color-stop count, stitch count, and hoop fit.
5. Copy the file to media prepared as required by the exact Janome or Elna model. Follow the machine manual for the required filesystem, filename rules, and folder location; some models scan only a particular folder or the drive root.

For desktop inspection or conversion, use software that reads PES and writes JEF, such as Embrilliance Essentials, Hatch Embroidery, or Wilcom. Open the PES design, select a hoop supported by the target machine, then use the program's Save As or Export Machine File command to create a JEF file. Ink/Stitch can also export JEF, but an imported PES design may be treated as stitch data rather than editable embroidery objects.

Compatibility and stitch-quality checks

Do not rename .pes to .jef. Changing the extension does not convert the internal embroidery data or create the JEF header required by the machine.

Conversion repackages existing stitch data; it does not improve digitizing. Stitch order, density, underlay, trims, pull compensation, and most color-stop positions remain those in the source design. A design with gaps, excessive density, or poor compensation needs correction or re-digitizing, not format conversion.

Verify that the design fits a hoop supported by the specific machine. A design outside the available JEF hoop range may be rejected, clipped, or require splitting into separate hoopings. Do not substantially resize a machine file without checking density and stitch length; large changes should be re-digitized from editable source artwork.

PES and JEF use different thread-palette conventions. The converted design should retain its color-change sequence, but displayed thread colors or manufacturer numbers can change during palette mapping. Compare the original color chart with the converted file and choose thread by the intended brand number or a physical swatch before sewing.

Run a small test stitch-out on similar fabric, stabilizer, needle, and thread before sewing the complete design. This exposes hoop-fit errors, color-stop differences, registration problems, and density issues that a file conversion cannot detect.
