What the DWG format is

In machine embroidery, DWG is an application-specific design or project format used by some embroidery programs; it is not a universally standardized machine-stitch format like JEF or DST. Depending on the software that created it, a DWG may contain outlines, fills, lettering, thread colors, stitch parameters, and editable object information.

DWG files commonly appear when a design is being edited in digitizing software rather than transferred directly to a machine. The file may depend on the original program's version, installed fonts, thread database, or digitizing settings, so a converter may need to interpret and regenerate its stitches before producing JEF.

What the JEF format is

JEF is Janome's machine-embroidery format. It stores commands such as needle movement, sewing, jumps, trims, color changes, and design metadata used by compatible Janome machines and software.

JEF is suitable when the finished design will be loaded through a Janome machine, Janome MemoryCraft software, or an embroidery application that supports JEF. It is a stitch format rather than a fully editable object format, so editing the original DWG before conversion generally preserves more control than editing the resulting JEF.

How to convert DWG to JEF

Quality and compatibility limits

A DWG-to-JEF conversion is not always a direct container change. If the DWG stores editable outlines or a digitizing project, the export software must calculate stitches; satin width, fill direction, density, underlay, lettering, and trims can therefore change during conversion.

Do not enlarge or reduce the JEF substantially after export. Scaling changes stitch spacing and may cause excessive density, gaps, thread breaks, or poor registration; resize the design in the digitizing application and recalculate stitches instead.

JEF files are associated with a hoop and machine capability. Check that the output fits the intended Janome hoop, uses supported trim and jump behavior, and stays within the machine's stitch-count and color-change limits. Test-sew the design on comparable fabric with the intended stabilizer before producing the final item.

If the converter rejects the file, confirm that it is an embroidery DWG and not a CAD drawing with the same extension. Also try opening and re-saving it in the program that created it, because some DWG variants are proprietary or version-dependent.
