What the DWG format is

In machine-embroidery workflows, DWG is not a universally standardized stitch format. It may identify a vendor-specific editable design or vector source containing outlines, fills, lettering, and design geometry rather than finalized machine stitches.

The application that created the file determines its exact structure. Specialized embroidery digitizing software and design systems with DWG export can create these files, but many embroidery programs cannot open every DWG variant. A DWG file can therefore contain enough information for editing while still lacking stitch type, density, underlay, pull compensation, trim commands, and machine color-change instructions.

What the VP3 format is

VP3 is a machine-embroidery stitch format associated mainly with Husqvarna Viking and Pfaff machines and their companion software. It stores stitch coordinates together with design sections, thread colors, color changes, and machine-oriented instructions.

VP3 is suitable for loading a digitized design into compatible embroidery software or a machine. It generally preserves color information more effectively than basic single-color stitch formats, but it is not intended for editing the original artwork. The VP3 file must contain an actual stitch plan, not just vector outlines.

How to convert DWG to VP3

1. Confirm the DWG variant. Open a copy in the embroidery application that created it, or ask the sender which program exported it. If the file contains only artwork, conversion will require digitizing rather than simple format translation.
2. Use a direct export when available. In a DWG-capable embroidery digitizer, open the file through File → Open or File → Import, check the design units and scale, then choose File → Export or Save As and select VP3. Set the target hoop, thread sequence, trims, and color-change behavior before saving.
3. Convert the artwork to a supported vector format if direct import fails. From the program that opens the DWG, export the design as SVG when possible. Import that SVG into Ink/Stitch or another digitizing program. If the source application offers no usable vector export, the design may need to be redrawn manually.
4. Digitize every object. Assign running stitches to outlines, satin stitches to narrow columns, and fill stitches to closed areas. Set stitch direction, density, underlay, pull compensation, trims, and the sewing order. Convert lettering to embroidery objects rather than leaving it as an editable font.
5. Export the stitch file. In Ink/Stitch, use Extensions → Ink/Stitch → Params to check the design, then use Extensions → Ink/Stitch → Embroider and select VP3 as the output format. Other digitizers use a VP3 option under File → Export.
6. Preview and test-sew the result. Review the stitch simulator for jumps, unnecessary trims, dense areas, and unexpected color changes. Load the VP3 file into the target machine or its preview software and sew a sample on the intended fabric.

Quality and compatibility limitations

The most significant limitation is that DWG geometry does not necessarily specify how the needle should sew. Automatic conversion can produce incorrect stitch direction, excessive density, long jumps, poor underlay, or unsuitable scaling. Manual checking in a digitizing application is required for production work.

Check the VP3 design against the machine's maximum hoop size, supported color-change count, thread format, and firmware. Preserve the original DWG because VP3 discards much of the editable object structure. Do not rename .dwg to .vp3; the file header and internal stitch records must be converted.
