Free online DWG to PEC converter

Brother and Baby Lock embroidery machines commonly require PEC files, so a design saved as .dwg must be converted before it can be loaded for stitching. The conversion may involve digitizing vector artwork rather than simply changing the filename or container.

What the DWG format is

In machine embroidery workflows, .dwg is an uncommon, software-specific design or drawing format rather than a universal machine-stitch standard. Its contents depend on the program that created it: some DWG variants store embroidery objects or digitizing information, while others contain vector outlines intended to be converted into stitches.

Open the file first in the embroidery or digitizing program that created it. A DWG from one application may not open in another because the extension does not define one consistent embroidery specification. Do not treat an embroidery DWG as an AutoCAD drawing unless its source documentation identifies it that way.

What the PEC format is

PEC is a machine-embroidery stitch format associated primarily with Brother and Baby Lock-compatible machines. It stores stitch commands, thread-color blocks, and design information that compatible embroidery software or machines can read.

PEC is useful when the target machine lists PEC compatibility or when a Brother-family design must be transferred through compatible embroidery software. It is not an editable digitizing format: after export, the design has less object-level information than the original project, and changing lettering, outlines, density, or underlay usually requires returning to the source design.

How to actually convert DWG to PEC

When the DWG contains an embroidery design

1. Make a backup of the original .dwg file and identify the application that produced it.
2. Open it in that application or in a digitizer that explicitly supports that DWG variant. Embird, Hatch Embroidery, and Wilcom EmbroideryStudio can export PEC from supported embroidery projects, but support for a file named .dwg is version- and producer-dependent.
3. Check the design preview for missing objects, incorrect thread colors, broken lettering, and changes to stitch direction.
4. Set the finished dimensions to fit the intended Brother or Baby Lock hoop. Recalculate stitch density, underlay, pull compensation, trims, and sequencing after any resize; do not enlarge or reduce an already-generated stitch file without reviewing the result.
5. Use File → Export, Save as, or the program's machine-format export command, select PEC, and save the result as a new file such as design.pec.
6. Open the PEC file again in the embroidery software, inspect its stitch simulation, and transfer it to the machine using the manufacturer's supported media or connection method.

When the DWG contains vector artwork

First convert the DWG to a vector format supported by the digitizing program, such as DXF or SVG. AutoCAD, DraftSight, or the ODA File Converter can produce DXF; then import it into Hatch Embroidery, Wilcom EmbroideryStudio, Embird Studio, or another digitizer that can create embroidery objects.

1. Export the artwork as .dxf or .svg, preserving scale and converting unsupported text into outlines.
2. Import the artwork through File → Import Artwork or the equivalent command.
3. Assign satin, fill, run, and appliqué objects; set stitch angle, density, underlay, compensation, trims, and thread sequence.
4. Run the simulator and correct gaps, excessive jumps, narrow satin columns, and dense overlaps.
5. Export the digitized result through File → Export → PEC or the equivalent machine-format command.

Quality and compatibility limitations

PEC export is not guaranteed to preserve every feature in a DWG project. Unsupported lettering, proprietary objects, specialty fills, appliqué instructions, and thread charts may be flattened, substituted, or omitted.

Verify the PEC file's hoop size, color order, thread stops, stitch count, and design orientation before sewing. The receiving machine may impose a smaller maximum area or a different thread-color interpretation than the digitizing software. Sew a test on comparable fabric, because density, underlay, pull compensation, and stabilizer determine the result more than the file extension.
